Report: U.S. Troops Short On Crucial Supplies

Hundreds of U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have experienced shortages of key protective equipment including armored vehicles, roadside-bomb countermeasures and communications gear, a Pentagon survey released Tuesday shows.

The Defense Department Inspector General's Office polled roughly 1,100 service members and found they weren't always adequately equipped for their missions. The troops were interviewed in Iraq and Afghanistan last May and June.

Those surveyed reported shortcoming with vehicles outfitted with armor; "crew-served weapons," which are weapons it takes more than one person to handle, such as artillery or a large machine gun; electronic countermeasure devices, such as equipment designed to foil roadside bombs by interfering with cell-phone signals that may be used to detonate them; and communications equipment.

The survey found that those not getting needed gear include troops performing untraditional missions such as training, reconstruction, detainee operations and explosive ordnance disposal.

In some cases, they went ahead with the work anyway, used informal means to get what they needed or canceled or put off operations while waiting for equipment, the report summary said.

Glad these FUBARs weren't running the Pentagon and U.S. Government during WWII!

2. So are all 21,000 surgers bringing all their gear with them?
Because I don't see equipment shortages being alleviated by putting more folks into the mix. In fact, the new arrivals just might be in even worse shape than the people already there.

Anyone in the Decider's administration want to 'splain this to us rabble? Or aren't we entitled to know whether our sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, fathers and mothers have adequate basic equipment?

5. WP story today said these troops are going to be short of
equipment. And units here will be unable to train because their equipment is in Iraq. But it was Clinton who broke the military! :sarcasm:

8. It's simpler than that. Gear's prioritized for units actually in Iraq
so rushing the 21,000 who have had gear stripped from them means there's no time to replenish the gear that they lack because they left gear in Iraq on the last deployment or similar things.

So they're being rushed back for "man"-power, not vehicular power.

6. First things first: Halliburton execs need their 10 tubs of tacos, chicken wings & big-screen TVs
for their taxpayer-funded Super Bowl parties.

7. You can bet the "private contractors" aka mercenaries aren't
going to be short of any needed equipment paid for with US tax dollars. Appalling, absolutely appalling.

17. I knew
a couple of weeks ago, when I saw a clip of american troops in action and they were all using AK-47s. IIRC use of captured weapons is contrary to regulations.

Q - How can oil companies be getting all they want and more but our troops are not being supplied?

A - a corrupt war-profiteering republican administration.
