AUSTIN -- President Bush's re-election campaign didn't schedule the announcement of its Texas leadership team to follow on the heels of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein's capture. But spokesmen were ready to pounce on the timing.

"I think most Democratic voters understand that the world is a much safer place, now that we have captured Saddam Hussein and restored democracy and democratic rule in Iraq," Bush adviser Karen Hughes said Tuesday.

"The only people that I have seen who don't feel the world is a safer place now that Saddam Hussein is in the custody of the United States of America are a few of the Democratic (presidential) candidates," she said.

I mean, seriously, how is it legal for a person in any elected position to run a campaign for someone else? We're getting back to the whole Katherine Harris thing again, there's way too much potential for abuse of power and conflict of interest. How is this insanity legal, nay, even accepted as ethical?

in Texas is in? I think they should campaign a bit there, but hopefully not spend too many resources.

8. the "resource" problem.....

Texas has a lot of democrats (it IS a big state) who over the years have contributed lots of money to the party. For several election cycles now, the Democratic Party has taken the money but NOT campaigned heavily in Texas, pretty much giving it up as a lost cause.

Is this "being realistic" or creating a self-fulfilling prophecy of failure? Why waste party resources, for example, in supporting a strong Democrat to represent Sugarland? What happened to the ruthless Democrats of yore who would have been out for DeLay's scalp?
