THE expertly co-ordinated sting operation was carried out by two Texan undercover narcotics officers posing as a dysfunctional couple.
Joanne Webb, a former teacher and a member of Burleson Chamber of Commerce in northeast Texas, fell for it just as they had planned. After an exchange of money, she supplied the “couple” with the prohibited goods. Handcuffs were produced, rights were read and the 42-year-old woman was arrested. She faces a year in jail and a $4,000 (£2,600) fine.

The goods were not narcotics or firearms, or even hardcore pornography. The couple had bought a vibrating erotic toy – a marital aid, according to Ms Webb – in a sale that contravenes the obscenity laws of Cleburne, a small town 50 miles southwest of Dallas. She had been busted by Operation G-Sting.

The prosecution of Ms Webb, who worked for Passion Parties, based in San Francisco, which sells sex aids through gatherings at people’s homes, has shocked even Texans, many of whom assumed their narcotics officers spent their time trying to catch drug dealers.

This reminds me that in the weeks leading up to 9/11, when the warning of a possible terrorist attack were coming hot and heavy and Ashcroft had already taken precautionary steps to save his own ass, he also had FBI agents stationed in New Orleans.

He had a whole team working for months to eventually bust 3 or 4 prostitutes in the Big Easy. So while America was under threat of attack -- and then was attacked -- he was diverting manpower looking for hookers on Bourbon St. And -- son of a gun -- he actually found one.

And America lost 3,000 people and its peace of mind while Ashcroft and Bush slept.
