'Rosetta' shows red planet in blue (translated from 'SPIEGEL')
Edited on Mon Feb-26-07 09:16 AM by Celefin
After ESA's comet chaser Rosetta successfully sling-shotted
past Mars yesterday in a distance of only 250 km there
are stunning photos to be seen today.

The deep space probe continues on it's course to the comet
Tschurjumow-Gerassimenko which it will reach in the
spring of 2014.

The lander 'Philae' was tested in the Mars maneuver
and all Instruments are working satisfactorily.

(German site, but very nice photographs)

(all info on the Rosetta mission, in English)

...thought it was time for some uplifting news :)

1. Here's the pic for those who want to see it fast
Nice, but strange. But image processing can do that. The blue must be CO2, or maybe water.

2. Thanks, that was quick!
By the way, the image was made taken by the 'Osiris'
Instrument of the probe. It is an overlay of the
orange, green and near ultraviolet channel.

In this combination the fuzzy structures are highlighted
best. They are actually cloud layers over Mars that are
difficult to spot in normal light.

But thanks for the photo provision :)

4. got to hand it to German science coverage
Der Spiegel has a really good online science section. If I want to find out what is up in the science world, I pop over there to get my news.

Great picture.

(And, yes, I read German.)
