RENO, Nev. (AP) - Rep. Jim Gibbons' bid to become chairman of the House Intelligence Committee improved with the surprise announcement that the current vice chairman won't run for re-election next year, the Nevada Republican said Wednesday.
Rep. Doug Bereuter, R-Neb., surprised Nebraskans late Tuesday when he said he'll give up his seat after 25 years in Congress. Bereuter had been in line to replace Rep. Porter Goss, R-Fla., the committee's current chairman who earlier indicated he would not seek re-election next year.
"It's certainly provided an opportunity that I am very interested in," Gibbons told The Associated Press on Wednesday.
Rep. Sherwood Boehlert, R-N.Y., would be the committee's next most senior member but he likely would have to give up chairing the House Science Committee to chair the intelligence panel, Gibbons said.
