Flint voters OK legalizing medical marijuana

Voters in the city gave approval to a measure legalizing the use of medical marijuana.

The proposal to allow the possession and use of marijuana with a doctor’s approval passed Tuesday with nearly 62 percent of the vote, or 1,777 to 1,101, in unofficial results, WJRT-TV reported.

The move is mostly symbolic, since state and federal laws outlaw the use of the drug, which advocates claim alleviates pain and nausea, The Flint Journal reported.

Detroit, Ann Arbor and Ferndale have approved similar measures. Voters in Traverse City in 2005 approved a measure that, while not legalizing the drug, declared possession, use or delivery by a medical patient the “lowest law enforcement priority of the city.”

1. I'm sick of this BS.
Just legalize it. I have a friend who's dying of hepatitis C and he can't afford doctors let alone dealing with the government and drug companies. I see how he suffers when he can't find any. I'm tired of the symbolic gestures. When the Democrats finally get back in a position where they can overcome any right wing interference I want this silly shit to stop. Legalize it and within 2 years there won't be any political repercussions. It will be as accepted as beer, wine and liquor and it will produce as much revenue.

8. When my friend had Hep C,
the medication she was on is known to deminish appetite. Her doctor was amazed that she was able to maintain her weight. It was all due to the weed she smoked; on days when she didn't have any, she didn't eat. When she smoked, though, she could and did eat.

11. Did she clear the virus?
There has been a resent study that found the people who smoked pot during the treatment for HCV had a better cure rate than those who didn't. This was due to the fact that the grass made the side effects of treatment more tolerable and people could adhere to the nightmare regimen much better. Fewer people quit the treatment before it was over because the side effects were more tolerable too. It not only saves lives but tons of money too.

So that was the 1st(I think) study to show that marijuana can improve a cure rate of a disease, not just ease the symptoms.

18. It's hard to tell.
I don't live by her anymore, so it's hard to know what's up from accross the country. It may be that she cleared the Hep but never really stopped drinking or doing the other drugs she does so her bad health may be a result of that, or of her Hep reoccuring. She's not of the Hep meds any longer, but again, hard to tell if that's because she's clear or because she no longr has health insurance.

22. My Fear is....
that if they legalize it then no one will be able to afford it unless they don't regulate it and thus allow anyone to grow it themselves.

Raebrek!!!

9. It won't be that way for too many more years, imho. The trend is towards legalization.

And these cities will have the laws in place for when that happens.

5. If California is any example...
it doesn't matter what the voters vote for, the government will ignore it and send in the DEA.

I once quite inadvertently got into a conversation with a man & wife who were both DEA agents. He said to me "we see recreational pot smokers as nothing more than job security."

I excused myself before I lost it and tore the Nazi motherfucker limb from limb.

12. They probably see medical marijuana users as "recreational users" too.
I hate those kinds of people too.

6. We need a national movement to end this madness...
WHY do none of our candidates address this issue?

Is public opinion still that the 'drug war' is worth all the money? All the prison & court costs?

7. But if it's legalized, the Pharmaceutical Industry won't make money off of the patch (Marinol) and
other medicines that they are making from extracting the THC out of the Marijuana.

No, they will not make their BILLIONS in bilking the Middle Class unless THC remains the property (patent) within the Drug Industry. :eyes:

13. I'm dying of cancer. I can't afford pain medication, never mind treatment.
I always feel pain coming from my chest. It's my constant, growing companion. I can't work, I have no health coverage, and I'm dying, slowly. When my chest hurts, each and every day seems to take forever, between coughing up blood and waiting to get exausted enough to hopefully go unconsious. All I have to look forward to is hoping it kills me sooner than later. I get no treatment, no help, and no chance to feel better.

Fuhank you, America. But on the up-side, at least I'll be dead before the law changes.

I was born in America. Tell me what it is that we got to be proud of, again? Mabey THAT will make me feel better.

14. You need the Duragesic patch or Roxanol.
Roxanol is cheaper. You can get 30 ml of liquid Roxanol from Walgreens for $65.00. This is highly concentrated liquid morphine. 1 ml contains 20 mg of morphine which would be enough to kill me probably. Each bottle contains 30 ml or 600 mg of Morphine. If you are unfamiliar with with Narcotics, that would last you for maybe a month. because of its concentration, you have to be VERY careful in measuring it out and you would have to explain to a physician why you need it, because you can't afford the the Duragesic patch at $165.00 for a fifteen day supply. The patch would be my first choice. There are assitance programs available to help you afford these things. Do a Google search.

17. An excellent book on medical marijuana:
Is Marijuana the Right Medicine for You
by Bill Zimmerman

Is Marijuana the Right Medicine for You

Synopsis:
The demand is growing for wider use of marijuana as a medicinal drug. In this book, three doctors describe each type of condition that marijuana can alleviate, explain recent scientific research, and provide practical information on the best ways to take it.

19. I spoke with a chemotherapy patient today who claimed that a few inhalations of marijuana
were as effective as intravenous Zofran at stopping her nausea (IV zofran is a very powerful anti-emetic or anti-nausea medicine which is most always only given in the hospital setting). She asserted that the effect was instant and described it as a wave of comfort that immediately washed away her nausea which was severe at the time. Shortly thereafter, she was hungry and ate. She also described the feeling of IV Zofran in this same way except there was no hunger afterwards. This hunger effect makes the marijuana far superior for chemo patients IMO. This patient also takes the Marinol 5 mg capsules and she states that they aren't as effective nor as immediate as inhaled marijuana and are frequently thrown up prior to entering the system. For anyone wishing to partake of medical marijuana I would recomend having a prescription for Marinol for no other reason than to provide a legal alibi for having THC in your system should a urine toxicology screen ever enter the picture for any reason. this person's word is goodenough for me. I'm convinced that inhaled marijuana has a very legitimate medical use that is unsurpassed in its efficacy by currently available prescription drugs. Marijuana is a God send to cancer and aids patients.

21. Bless her heart! Pot is a blessing for so many illnesses. I was
shocked when I found asthma and epilepsy listed.

It even helps keep the other meds down, which is a double blessing.

Vaporizers are the way to go, imo too. And your Marinol suggestion is a great idea. Wish PA would lighten up. Poppy seeds give a THC positive also, as I understand it.

It kept me from being hospitalized for severe bi-polar for 35 years. The year I quit, I ended up hospitalized 4 times in 3 months. Threw out the pills after that.

Hope your friend does well. I'm glad she has the weed. It really does beat most poisons they give you.

:hi:
