No attempted murder charge for astronaut Nowak

ORLANDO, Florida (AP) -- Florida prosecutors charged an astronaut Friday with trying to kidnap a woman she saw as a rival for a space shuttle pilot's affections, but they declined to file an attempted murder charge that had been recommended by police.

Lisa Nowak, 43, was formally charged almost a month after she was arrested at an Orlando airport parking lot.

Police have said the Houston mother of three had raced 900 miles in her car from Texas to Orlando on February 5 to confront the woman. She reportedly donned a wig and trench coat, then sprayed a chemical into the woman's car when she wouldn't let Nowak in, police said.

In addition to attempted kidnapping with intent to inflict bodily harm, state prosecutors charged Nowak on Friday with burglary with an assault using a weapon and battery.

I prefer H S Thompson's hilarious wind-up of the arrogant, big-time astronaut in the restaurant, who fancied himself as the ultimate all-American icon that the military-industrial establishment play them all up to be.

They got the band who were frinds of theirs to play leftie, hippy-type tunes - which enraged his nibs, who then started drunkenly raging about them being Un-American or traitors or some such nonsense.

Next, the restaurant security guys bundled him out cursing and raving at them more than ever. Whereupon Thomson bellowed out, "If there's one thing I hate, it's a goddam Polack!"

That did nothing, of course, to restore his equanimity, though I dare say the booze prevented a heart attack.

3. In defense of jusitce...

she had a friggin' BB gun and no BBs. Where the cops deduced attempted murder from that is beyond me. Maybe they thought she was going to bludgeon the woman with it.

One other thing. People go mental and flip out every day, all over the world. She happened to be an astronaut and got a lot of press, that's all.
