Bush to visit Ala. school hit by twister

ENTERPRISE, Ala. - Betty Thomas' house was without power, battered by a tornado that killed eight students at a nearby high school.

But Thomas said she was more concerned about caring for her five grandchildren and neighbors — who she was barbecuing food for in her front yard Friday — than about how much the government will chip in to help fix her place up.

"I haven't even had a chance to think about that," said Thomas, 54. "I'm just glad to be here."

President Bush was expected to visit Enterprise on Saturday, a day after Gov. Bob Riley toured the town's heavily damaged school and ravaged neighborhoods.

Federal Emergency Management Agency officials fanned Friday out to assess the damage, which Police Chief T.D. Jones said covered a swath about four miles long and hundreds of yards wide. Riley promised the state would help rebuild Enterprise High School, where a tornado struck Thursday, killing eight students.

7. E-Z decision politically. LA is heavily Bu$h Country (Lower Alabama).

And Enterprise is one of the Ft. Rucker "towns." Ft. Rucker is the home of Army Aviation and, as so, heavily invested in the Iraq war. Still .. there are many there who wish that Bu$h stay away. Any way you cut it, it is just another cynical, Rovian photo-op for his emotionless boss-man.

10. Probably just an attempt to change people's image

of him and how he handles disasters. One of the problems in this, in fact the biggest problem with this is, the differences between the two scenarios.

1) Two days after Katrina hit, the floods were still raging and people were still in danger and dying. In Enterprise the storm is over and so is the dying, only funerals await.

2) Katrina took out a whole city and killed thousands, while as tragic as it is, the Alabama tornado hit an area of four miles long by hundred of yards wide and killed perhaps 20 altogether.

3) After Katrina we watched continuously as these people struggled and died. After the tornado we watched clips of them digging out their dead. One showed continuance, one showed finality.

4) The biggest difference is the faces we saw on the TV screen. During the Katrina crisis we saw hundreds/thousands of urban dwelling mostly "Black" faces crying and begging for help. In Alabama we see more rural/small town "white" faces as they cry and speak softly about their sadness and the people lost to the storm. Is it just accidental that one would cause bush not to take notice while one takes precedent for his attention.

We are not stupid mr. bush, we see the differences and we will not forget.

I just went to CNN's news page and there is a picture of bush and a "Black" family. They are all smiling and seem very happy to be photo opted with the bush. Oh well, my stomach is now very ill, but then it always is when I see bush or one of the bushettes.
