2 NATO soldiers killed during combat operations in southern Afghanistan

The Associated Press
Published: March 4, 2007

KABUL, Afghanistan: Two NATO soldiers were killed during combat operations
in southern Afghanistan, NATO said Sunday.

The soldiers died on Saturday, though NATO's International Security Assistance
Force did not identify their nationalities or say where the violence happened.

Helmand province, where British troops operate, has seen a number of clashes
the last several weeks. Canada also has large numbers of troops in the south,
in neighboring Kandahar province.

JALALABAD, Afghanistan, March 4 (Reuters) - Several Afghan civilians
were killed on Sunday when foreign troops opened fire after a suicide
bomber rammed his car into their convoy, an official and witnesses said.

In a separate incident, two NATO soldiers were killed during combat
operations in the south of the country on Saturday, the force said.
Their nationalities were not given.

The suicide bomb attack and shooting happened on a main road linking
the eastern city of Jalalabad to the Pakistani border.

"A suicide bomber attacked a convoy of foreign troops and subsequently
the soldiers in the convoy fired in self defense resulting to the killing
and wounding of some civilians," said Noor Agha Zwak, a provincial
government spokesman.

Both NATO and U.S.-led coalition troops operate in the east of the
country.

Ambush on U.S. convoy leaves 16 dead 16 minutes ago

KABUL, Afghanistan - A "complex" ambush involving a suicide car bomb and militant gunfire killed 16 Afghan civilians and wounded 25 people during an attack on a coalition convoy in eastern Afghanistan on Sunday, officials said.

The suicide bomber hit the American convoy with an explosives-packed minivan, said Noor Agha Zawok, the spokesman for the governor of Nangarhar province, and militants then fired gunfire from several directions, the U.S. military said. Coalition forces returned fire in defense of the attack, the U.S. said.

It wasn't immediately clear if the Afghans were killed by the militants gunfire or that of the U.S. soldiers.

LONDON, March 4 (Reuters) - Two British soldiers were killed by a rocket attack during operations in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence said on Sunday.

"It is with deep regret that I must confirm the death of two members of 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery, who died during operations in Helmand," said Brigadier Jerry Thomas in a statement.

Thomas said the attack was in the Sangin area but he was unable to say when it took place.

NATO in Afghanistan said two soldiers, whose nationalities it did not release, were killed during combat operations in the south on Saturday.

Britain is due to increase its troop numbers in southern Afghanistan by 800 over the next few months, adding a third battalion of infantry and bringing its total above 6,000, nearly all deployed in the south.
