Michael Mori threatened with removal from Hicks' case
The brilliant MIchael Mori apparently is too good for them.
He doesn't look like Cruise, but he knows his stuff.

1. He's being removed for contemptuous language?
Major Mori has been accused of breaching Article 88 of the US military code.

It prohibits contemptuous language against the President, the Vice-President, Secretary of State and Congress.

3. They must be desperate to destroy Mr. Hicks.
He has been through hell already. I hope somehow he will get "sprung" someday, and get the hell outta there.

What a miserable shame.

I think you're right, and imagine they wanted to diminish Hick's chances of getting adequate representation.

4. The same military courts now being used against Mr. Hicks, will be used against us
in the future. We are down the slippery slope to tyranny, and few in Congress seem to have taken notice.

5. This is very, very dirty lawyering by the government.
The mere threat of prosecuting this man seems to mean that he will have to request removal from the Hicks case because his own interests now conflict with that of his client now that Mori himself stands to be a defendant, therefore in one stroke removing the high quality legal representation that Hicks has been receiving from this man. If that was done to a prosecutor it would be considered obstruction of justice.

7. Mr Mori is a very impressive man. I don't think he will let this
thing go now. He has put his life into it. He knows
that if he is defeated on this, then it won't be worth
having a legal system. It simply means that they will
go to any length to win. The plot has been lost.
A few good men/women need to expose this descent into tyranny.

9. I see it as hand in glove with the attack on the civilian law firms.
This is beyond the pale and can't be accepted in a civilized country. It makes the law an ass and says that if Congress and the administration has behaved contemptuously, a lawyer for a defendant has a greater duty to not say the Emperor has no clothes than to defend his client. Perhaps that is correct under a narrow interpretation of the law but, even if it were so, to deny legal representation in this manner is a stake through the heart of basic principles of due process.

11. Well put! How are things going in Canada. We don't hear that
much about your country way down here in Oz.
Are the progressives in power or are you suffering as well.

13. There is a conservative govt in power but trying to look respectable.
It's gained in polls recently because the sky hasn't fallen and there's election fatigue, but it's not exactly the Gingrich revolution. And the Liberals that got tossed were in power a long while and had gotten arrogant and there was a fair bit of corruption (not abnormal, but it'd gone unchallenged due to a long period of center-right weakness).

The suffering could be a lot worse. The economy's continued to be pretty good. So it's chugging along while a lot of Canadian troops are gearing up for the spring offensive expected in Afghanistan.

10. The Gov is stretching, as with Padilla.
They want this to never go to trial (at least during the Idiot's term) and this will drag out the case forever.

After all, Hicks is charged with a "crime" that wasn't even on the books when he was captured. They don't have a case and they know it.

This administration keeps flushing lawyers down the drain.

16. It could end up being bad for John Howard.
Michael Mori said today that it would take time for a new lawyer to
familiarise himself with David Hicks's case, and he probably wouldn't
be ready in the 30 days remaining before Hicks's first hearing.

http://www.abc.net.au/am/content/2007/s1862841.htm

That would mean a postponement, and that wouldn't be good for Howard,
who would like to have the situation resolved before the election.

I am not completely clear on the American legal system.
A position that seems to be shared by most of the Admin.
