Wal-Mart target of worker rights complaints in Phillipines - 03/05/07

By Jesse Russell

Wal-Mart is once again under fire, this time from a watchdog group alleging that the world’s biggest retailer is responsible for worker abuse in a Philippines factory that creates apparel for the company. According to the Worker Rights Consortium the factory violates labor rights by forcing overtime, violating minimum wage standards, and working with the government to commit violence against striking employees. According to the organization, Wal-Mart was notified in November but has yet to apply any pressure on the factory. The factory produces apparel for Wal-Mart supplier One Step Up.
