Webb to Introduce Legislation Barring Funding For Military Action Against Iran

WASHINGTON — A Democratic senator is introducing legislation Monday that would deny funding for the Bush administration to take military action against Iran without getting congressional approval first.

Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., has long argued that Iran must be part of a regional solution to end the war in Iraq, and has repeatedly concerns that the Bush administration deems the 2002 congressional resolution authorizing force in Iraq applicable to Iran.

Webb's amendment would prohibit Bush from spending any money on a "unilateral military action in Iran without the express consent of the Congress."

Webb told FOX News last week that some exceptions would be permitted, for instance it would allow to the continuation of the current effort to stop Iranians interfering in Iraq. Webb said his concern came about when he compared the 2002 authorization to go to war in Iraq with the presidential signing statement accompanying it clarifying prerogatives the administration deemed permissible under the authorization.

2. Unilateral? So Bush just needs to get any other country to join in?
Granted... that actually might be difficult, unless you count say... er Israel, but even then, I doubt Bush wants that glory taken away from him personally... and Israel could go without the grief...

Just something that sprang out. I mean, this is an article about the bill, not the bill.

7. In this case, unilateral means our side vs their side ......
"Our Side" being us and any other nation damned fool enough to join with us ....... "Their Side" would be Iran and any other nation who chooses to stand with them.

4. Webb's bill may be blocked by the Republicans but
it will probably get a majority vote. I am talking over 50%. There is no way that a Republican bill would get a majority vote.

5. I would like to thank the people of Virginia for giving us Senator Webb.
He has been very impressive, and I love that he's talking to the media about Bush's signing statements.

6. Hope this works, until I watched 'Why We Fight'
I would have whooped and hollered. But after last night and seeing how tied in Congress is to the MIC (military industrial complex) re: MIC provides jobs in a Congresscritter's district, I have become very cynical thinking that anyone or anything can stop this Govt. machine.

I hope Jim Webb proves me wrong!

12. On his show, Tweety asked Webb to tell him whenever Hillary signs as co-sponsor
Why just Hillary, Tweety? Every Democrat should endorse legislation that tells Bush he can't go to war against Iran without first going to Congress. I want to see every Democratic Presidential candidate endorse and support such type of legislation. I would add one caveat: we know enough about Bush and his lies that we shouldn't even give him an opening like Webb does on hot pursuit and protecting troops. Bush will provoke Iran and then claim Iran was at fault all along.
