ABC: CIA Rushing Resources to Bin Laden Hunt

CIA Rushing Resources to Bin Laden Hunt

Armed with fresh intelligence, the CIA is moving additional man power and equipment into Pakistan in the effort to find Osama bin Laden and his deputy Ayman al Zawahri, U.S. officials tell ABC News.

"Reports that the trail has gone stone cold are not correct," said one U.S. official. "We are very much increasing our efforts there," the official said.

People familiar with the CIA operation say undercover officers with paramilitary training have been ordered into Pakistan and the area across the border with Afghanistan as part of the ramp-up.

Although never publicly acknowledged, Pakistan has permitted CIA teams to secretly operate inside Pakistan.

2. How exciting! I'm just so thrilled! bushco has failed to get this guy for 6 years after he
"attacked" us inside our own borders, and meanwhile they've destroyed nearly everything we hold dear, and NOW they're going to make a big push to catch him.

Junior's juvenile attitude precluded any interest in bin Laden. He wasn't interested in retaliating for the attack on the USS Cole because it occurred during Clinton's presidency. It was like they attacked the Democratic States of America but Junior lived in the Republican States of America. Here's one reason I believe that:

Clarke vs. Rice: Excerpts from testimony
Thursday, April 8, 2004

Fifteen days after former White House counterterrorism chief Richard Clarke testified before the 9/11 commission, national security adviser Condoleezza Rice made her case before the panel.

Here are excerpts from their testimony on several key issues before the commission.

<snip>

Why didn't Bush respond to the USS Cole bombing?

CLARKE: I suggested, beginning in January of 2001, that ... there was an open issue which should be decided about whether or not the Bush administration should retaliate for the Cole attack .

Unfortunately, there was no interest, no acceptance of that proposition. And I was told on a couple of occasions, "Well, you know, that happened on the Clinton administration's watch."

I didn't think it made any difference. I thought the Bush administration, now that it had the CIA saying it was al Qaeda, should have responded.

RICE: I do not believe to this day that it would have been a good thing to respond to the Cole, given the kinds of options that we were going to have. ... We really thought that the Cole incident was passed, that you didn't want to respond tit-for-tat. ...

Just responding to another attack in an insufficient way we thought would actually probably embolden the terrorists -- they had been emboldened by everything else that had been done to them -- and that the best course was to look ahead to a more aggressive strategy against them.

To the tribal areas of Pakistan, perhaps the single most lawless and violent areas on the face of the earth. Even the Pakistani Army is loath to go there.

That is sure one duty station I would hate to see come up, if I was a CIA Knuckledragger, no matter how much I liked being in the middle of the furball.

35. Not to worry, his rich pals have bought him a legacy
Half a billion dollars are sitting in a stink tank right now, just to pump out post-presidency good news history remakes forever. That's the way it's done when you give the rich folks all the tax cuts they want. Haven't you noticed all the things that are named after Saint Gipper? They even named an airport after him that was already named after another president.

We missed our chance at Tora Bora...To kill him now inside Pakistan risks erupting yet another war we are not equipped to fight nor apt to stomach.

I guess they want to rescue his image by killing Bin Laden before he is done, but like everything these clowns do, they will fuck it up.

26. First : The US (and anyone else for that matter) ....
Can enter the tribal areas at will, if they can walk over mountain passes and meld into the population .... They could have always done this, and most surely have ..... The Pakistani border is far from being a solid barrier ... it is extremely porous ...

Second: Osama and al Zawahiri can hide indefinitely, given the difficult terrain and remoteness of most locations ..... This is, of course, why they 'havent' already been spotted ....

Third: It is obvious that the 25 MILLION dollar reward hasnt motivated a single successful turncoat ..... It doesnt appear that will change anytime soon ....

I often think about the exit of the USSR from Afghanistan .... the degrading march through the passes towards the north .... leaving in abject failure ... like so many before .....

They will never find OBL ..... Not there ....

General says eliminating bin Laden not priority

By CHRIS VAUGHN
Fort Worth Star-Telegram

FORT WORTH — The Army's highest-ranking officer and the former leader of the secretive world of Special Operations offered his thoughts on the importance of capturing or killing Osama bin Laden during a luncheon here Friday.

They're probably not what anyone expected.

"I don't know whether we'll find him," Gen. Peter Schoomaker, the Army chief of staff, said in a speech to the Rotary Club of Fort Worth. "I don't know that it's all that important, frankly."

Schoomaker, pulled out of retirement in 2003 to lead the Army, pointed to the capture of Saddam Hussein, the killings of his sons, Uday and Qusay, and the killing of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi as evidence that bin Laden's capture or death would have little effect on the threats to the United States.

"So we get him, and then what?" Schoomaker said. "There's a temporary feeling of goodness, but in the long run, we may make him bigger than he is today. He's hiding, and he knows we're looking for him. We know he's not particularly effective. I'm not sure there's that great of a return" on capturing or killing bin Laden.
