U.S. Military Defends Erasing Images from Afghanistan

The concern had been that the "photographers would not accurately represent what the scene looked like immediately after the ambush," Mitchell said.

"In this case we give a lot of deference to the commanders at the site conducting the investigation," he said.

However, "we have reminded our forces in the area that only in extreme circumstances is this practice condoned," Mitchell added.

The United Nations said it was trying to verify what happened.

I thought all those military folks were defending my freedom, not curtailing it. Why can't I see what I paid for in Afghanistan? Isn't this part of my tax dollars at work? Or am I just supposed to pay for all this death and destruction and not worry my pretty little head about the details? Because when the inevitable payback comes, I'm supposed to just wave the flag harder and higher, and wonder why "they" hate us so much.
