Court Rules on Ten Commandments Displays
Court Rules on Ten Commandments Displays

Thursday, December 18, 2003 12:25 p.m. ET

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- A federal appeals court ruled Thursday that three counties violated the Constitution by posting the Ten Commandments in public buildings, even though the religious laws were accompanied by other historical documents.

McCreary and Pulaski county officials hung framed copies of the Ten Commandments in their courthouses and later added other documents, such as the Magna Charter and Declaration of Independence, after the display was challenged. Harlan County had similar displays in its schools.

The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel upheld U.S. District Judge Jennifer Coffman's 2001 order to remove the displays from public view.

Coffman said in her ruling that the purpose of displaying the Ten Commandments was "religious in nature." (snip/...)

1. The Ten Commandments religious in nature ~ Who'd a thunk it?
Seperate the church from the state or give up America.

6. both Virginians....same state where 'christians' execute juveniles
with glee....

jerry falwell and pat robertson are the radical cheap-labor-conservatives that keep rural Virginia in a semi-slave state....complete with jurors that in God's name, will now execute (KILL) another child with OUR taxes....bibles in hand...these extreme religiously-insane people only believe that the commandments apply to OTHERS, but not themselves...they have absolutely no qualms about KILLING a young black man in Virginia...smiling all the way to church on Sunday....KILL, KILL, KILL.....

3. No version of the 10 Suggestions is religiously neutral.
Even if the 10C is to be posted as one of the 'historic documents' forming a basis of our civilization, or society, or laws, or whatever, there is the question of which version. Most often it is the 'Protestant version,' with the fourth being a prohibition of 'graven images' -- a prohibition widely violated by the posting of images of the 10Cs.

4. Has anyone else
noticed how many of these religious right whackos (I don't mean the general Xtian population!) have come out of the closet with the chimp in office? It's ridiculous and completely disgusting. The government is supposed to be keeping church and state separated, but it is dragging these fundies and evangelicals out and showcasing them and their absurdity even more than usual. If the chimp wasn't in the white house, this would be a moot point, but he's the one encouraging the farce that is the religious right.

I have to say that this very vocal minority has given so many good people a rotten, stinking name that I am surprised that more moderate Xtians don't start speaking out against these morons.

Some of these people might be okay, but they've been given a green light from this mAdministration to spread their "gospel" without regard to the beliefs that others might have of their own. When a religious zealot starts to try to convince me that evolution is a myth and creationism is the truth, all I want to do is dunk their heads under water until they stop breathing. It's about free speech, yes, but I don't think they would stand anywhere close if I started reciting chants from a Book of Shadows.
