Turkey bans access to YouTube after Greeks insult Attaturk
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17497711/

ISTANBUL, Turkey - A Turkish court ordered access to YouTube's Web site blocked on Wednesday, after a prosecutor recommended the ban because of videos allegedly insulting the founder of modern Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
...
Over the past week, Turkish media publicized what some called a "virtual war" between Greeks and Turks on YouTube, with people from both sides posting videos to belittle and berate the other.
...
The video prompting the ban allegedly said Ataturk and the Turkish people were homosexuals, news reports said. The CNN-Turk Web site featured a link allowing Turks to complain directly to YouTube about the "insult."
...
Insulting Ataturk or "Turkishness" is a crime in Turkey punishable by prison.

1. Banning Virtual War, that's funny. If Cheney knew how he could make money off
of virtual War he would be all over the net.

4. I know this seems impossible...
But after following the YouTube "Greek vs. Turk" threads, one could well come away with the impression that FweePeeVille is the home of reason and enlightenment.

It is, hands-down, some of the stupidest shit that has ever appeared on my monitor. It is so stupid that those who view it could be risking permanent alterations in brain structure and function.

9. Hardly,
I know it sounds harsh, but I might be able to gain some small amount of comfort from the fact that these guys were killing each other and thus, removing themselves from the gene pool.

But this shit does not even provide that.

5. So what's the point of the ban really?
It's not like Turkey is keeping the Greeks from complaining about them, just from seeing the Greek-made You Tube vids?

10. I read that the point was that it is against the law to ridicule Ataturk and
the Turkish identity.

12. HowTo Evade Turkey's YouTube Block - Updated
Wednesday, 7 March 2007

A 27B source inside Turkey reports that some proxies work for routing around the country's block on YouTube, which was instituted at the direction of a court after it found that a Greek video hosted on the site violated a law against ridiculing the country and its leaders.

"Apparently, only Turk Telekom has enacted the ban so far, which is a bit deceptive, since all other providers have to route through Turk Telekom to get out of the country...so it's an effective country-wide ban," the source said.

Things that seem to work now:
- Using Firefox, instead of IE or Safari (though oddly, the screenshot above is from Firefox)

- YouTube videos embedded in a web page or blog work fine

- A proxy, specifically http://youtubeproxy.org/ works well. Just visit that page and then find the video you want to watch.

13. AP: Turkey lifts YouTube ban after two days
Turkey lifts YouTube ban after two days

Fri Mar 9, 9:18 AM ET

ISTANBUL, Turkey - Turkey lifted its ban on YouTube Friday, an official for the
country's largest telecommunications firm said, two days after a court ordered
the Web site blocked because of videos that allegedly insulted the founder of
modern Turkey.

Ahter Kutadgu, head of corporate communications for Turk Telekom, told the
Anatolia news agency his company had been notified of a court decision to lift
the ban.

Kutadgu did not elaborate on the court's reasoning. "As soon as the court
decision lifting the ban reached us, we immediately opened YouTube," he said.

The ban had been condemned by the press freedom group Reporters without
Borders and drew attention to Turkey's shaky record on permitting free
expression.
