Coins circulating without ‘In God We Trust’ (Mint Goof - $1 Coin $50 Value)
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17501178/

An unknown number of new George Washington dollar coins were mistakenly struck without their edge inscriptions, including “In God We Trust,” and are fetching around $50 apiece online.

The properly struck dollar coins, bearing the likeness of the nation’s first president, are inscribed along the edge with “In God We Trust,” “E Pluribus Unum” and the year and mint mark. The flawed coins made it past inspectors and went into circulation Feb. 15.

<snip>

About half were made in Philadelphia and the rest in Denver. So far the mint has only received reports of error coins coming from Philadelphia, mint spokeswoman Becky Bailey said.

Bailey said it was unknown how many coins lacked the inscriptions. Ron Guth, president of Professional Coin Grading Service, one of the world’s largest coin authentication companies, said he believes that at least 50,000 error coins were put in circulation.

“The first one sold for $600 before everyone knew how common they actually were,” he said. “They’re going for around $40 to $60 on eBay now, and they’ll probably settle in the $50 range.”

7. once again...
Once again, the Washington dollar is too much like a quarter, as was Sacajawea and Susan B. before.

Is this some plot to get us to overspend? I have no earthly idea why the mint would do this over and over? Why not a dollar coin the size of the old fifty-cent pieces?

But I'm gonna check for "In God We Trust," and would be thrilled to find a few of the "improved varieties." The $49 extra dollars from one of those would help make up for all the Susan B's I've given away as quarters...

12. Wasn't this coin the single legacy from the ill fated
Noe, the coin collector, and his thankfully brief reign at the mint, courtesy of dumb little Nappie george's repayment to his "pioneer" campaign fund accumulators?

Trying to remember just how long that thief was in charge-it wasn't long.

14. "dollar coins usually come and go for some reason"
Imagine carrying a hundred dollars in coin in your pocket, or fifty, or even twenty five. Well, you get the idea. Plus the fact that when you pay with it, they will have to be counted out the same as your change is now. What is the use of a one dollar coin when you would only carry a few and use them for small purchases. They would not replace larger dimension paper money. JMHO

5. kestrel's prediction for fundie response:
a campaign to buy up every last one of these things and melt them down. Can't have ANY US money WITHOUT "In God We Trust" on it, you know.

Those are Satan's dollars.

8. The Clinton Administration strikes again!
Clearly, this is the fault of Clinton-era staff who've been hiding at the US Mint waiting to strike a blow for godless securlarism...

13. God made these coins to test our faith
Either that, or Satan got a job at the mint. It's in Revelations.
