White House: Bush to veto calls for withdrawal from Iraq

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush would veto Democratic proposals to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq in late 2007 or by the end of 2008, Dan Bartlett, Counselor to the president, said Thursday.

"The administration would vehemently oppose and ultimately veto any legislation that looked like what was described today," Bartlett said aboard Air Force One in route to Sao Paulo, Brazil.

"What we're seeing here is an artificial, precipitous withdrawal from Iraq based on, unfortunately, politics in Washington, not on conditions on the ground in Baghdad, Iraq," he added.

2. Fine, how do you like impeachment then, asshole?
It's either that, or we throw you out by force.

There's no way the public will stand for a Bush veto if it gets through congress.

3. "...conditions on the ground..." Indeed, there's cake and roses petal on the ground everywhere...
Problem is, they're on the ground because a suicide bomber has taken out yet another market filled with people.

8. He doesn't hold the moral highground on this threat.
Bring it on, Dimson. We can and should put the Party of Bush on record where they stand on this most important issue. Time for the Rubberstamping Party to make a decision...are you with Bush or with the American people? Methinks that they'll start to desert him as soon as the vote comes up and their bluff is called.

22. There are too many "conservative" Dems
for that to pass.

There are also too many pukes in the Senate to override the inevitable veto.

I kind'a like their new strategy.

Win-Win

bush vetoes the supplemental -- he hates the troops

bush signs - he's committed to HIS timetable.

19. Political win if he vetos. Policy win if he signs. I'd rather have the policy win.
But the political win will help bring about the policy win later on.

17. I don't see that as much of a threat
There isn't any downside here, except insofar as Bush's stubborn refusal to treat with reality will consign even more people to an early death. But making a record of public opposition to the ongoing prosecution of this misguided imperial adventure, as well as affixing this war even more securely around the necks of the Republican party, while carrying out the will of the people, makes this a dare or a threat to be faced down squarely and resolutely.
