BAGHDAD — Nashwan Habeeb quietly shouldered the stress of Baghdad's violence for more than two years.
But when the anxiety crept into his bedroom and began affecting his performance with his wife, Habeeb sought help. He went to a nearby pharmacist and bought several pills — little blue knockoffs of the popular American drug Viagra.
....
"The stress and the bad things that we see each day make a lot of Iraqis (feel) like me," said Habeeb, 35, who began using the pills a year ago. "It helps us get over the stress and feel like men again."
Pharmacists in Baghdad are noticing a steady increase in customers asking for pills for male sexual enhancement. The pills, usually made in India, are replicas of Viagra with similar-sounding names like "Kamagra" and "Luvagra."
Unlike in the United States, a doctor's prescription is not required for such pills in Iraq. The imitations are also cheap — around $1 for a 4-tablet packet.
