Edwards pitches health-care plan in Council Bluffs
BY ROBYNN TYSVER
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa - When an Iowa man asks presidential contender John Edwards about illegal immigrants "bleeding" this nation's hospitals, the Democrat doesn't mince words.

He told an overflow audience of 350 today in Council Bluffs that his health-care proposal does not, and should not, deny health care for illegal immigrants.

He then went further. Edwards acknowledged that many people in the audience would disagree with him but he believes the 12 million illegal immigrants in this country should be given a chance to earn their citizenship.

Edwards was in western Iowa today as part of a two-day swing through the state to hawk his universal health-care plan.

Details to follow.

Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards greets potential supporters before speaking at a town hall meeting to discuss his plan for universal health care, Friday in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

He has visited the state 19 times since the 2004 election, when he came in second in the caucuses to the Democrats' eventual nominee, John Kerry.

Edwards hopes to win the Hawkeye State and build momentum to carry him past Democratic superstars Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama in the New Hampshire and South Carolina primaries.

The crowd that packed the senior center indicated that Edwards starts this year's race in a better position than when he was a relatively unknown senator from North Carolina in 2004.

But he still has a long way to go.
