Top US Republican (Sen. Mitch McConnell) says this is Iraq's last chance

INTERVIEW-Top US Republican says this is Iraq's last chance

WASHINGTON, March 9 (Reuters) - Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell warned Iraq on Friday that President George W. Bush's decision to send more American troops into the country is "their last chance to get it right."

McConnell, a leading congressional supporter of Bush's strategy, said the Iraqis must step up their efforts to secure their own country.

"This (new U.S.-led mission) ... which requires significant Iraqi participation to succeed, is their last chance to get it right," McConnell said in an interview with Reuters.

"I'm among a number of people that the Iraqis would pay attention to, and that message is for them," said McConnell, declining to specify how much time they should have or what the United States should do if they failed.

"Even people like me, who have no regrets about going into Iraq, and think it was the right thing to do, believe that it is getting close to the time where they've got to do the lion's share of the lifting," he said.

2. I love how these politicians.........
talk about the Iraqi's "stepping up" so we can "step down". While there is a kernel of truth and reality in that message, it's really just a way to absolve this country of blame. Instead of "it was immoral and misguided for the United States to invade and occupy Iraq", it'll be "we were right to go to war, but the Iraqi's just couldn't pull their weight".

3. There are plenty of Iraqis stepping up to take over
We call them the insurgents and they are not who we want. I don't ever see any group "stepping up" to be our surrogates. Plenty of groups "stepping up" to run Iraq in a way they see fit, not as a US puppet.

19. Yup! These Iraqis want to keep 4 barrels out of 4 for the Iraqi people
Edited on Sun Mar-11-07 12:18 AM by Amonester
to benefit from (and, of course, to pay for).

Bu$che (actually, darth cheneyous elf) want them to keep just 1 out of 4 (and force the U.S. taxpayers to pay for 4, plus at the pump for their CEO cronies' "bonu$e$" ).

Who Will Win?

But Mostly: Who Will Pay?

(us? or them?)

His comments are a Band-Aid on the gaping, pus-filled wound that is this immoral and illegal war.

7. Same stupid talking points since November
This is breaking news? He says the same stupid line every time he gets in front of a camera. Glad he has no regrets about the tens of thousands killed over there for a pack of lies.

13. Evidently, he's feeling some heat from the steadily growing momentum
against the war.

If he's starting to make this kind of noise, he must be feeling it. I wonder what his calls and emails are like. I know I've called his office to lean on this.

THIS is why we should NEVER hesitate to call someone in the enemy compound. We should NEVER get discouraged and think it's no use if we have a republi-CON Senator or Congressperson. We should NEVER hesitate to let them know how large the movement AGAINST them is growing, how it's beginning to mushroom. Yep, that smoking gun is turning into a mushroom cloud alright, mitch. They need to be forced to see how seriously and extensively the ice is cracking under their feet. I suspect, from reading this, that he's noticing that, and is starting to sweat. The momentum to end the war and bring us home is ONLY growing.

Shit - when you have joe scarborough going on TV loudly and for a whole segment including numerous promos during his show talking about how the Dems finally showed some spine yesterday when they upped the ante to stop the war, you KNOW mitch mcconnell is feeling it. scarborough even went so far as to note, during that show, that it's what the voters decreed last November. He noticed. And if he noticed it, and he's saying it, YOU BETTER BELIEVE others on the Dark Side are doing likewise. YOU BET THEY'RE NOTICING, and more painfully aware by the day that they're on the losing end of this. It's already cost them their majorities in BOTH houses of Congress, and I'm sure some of them (ESPECIALLY disgruntled would-be Senate leader mcconnell - who'd be the kingpin around there if it weren't for last November's elections) are still smarting from that. I'll bet there's a shitload of them suffering MANY sleepless nights these days. Lots of tossing and turning, I suspect. And LOTS of serious thinking going on even as we speak - about how to save face. Because they bet ALL THEIR CHIPS on this, and on bush, AND EVERYBODY KNOWS IT. And they're losing. BADLY. Moreso day-by-day. AND EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT, TOO. THAT'S the "slow bleed", THERE. What you see from him now, I'll bet, is his first attempts at tiptoeing out toward some sort of face-saving exit. He's flailing around now, trying to reframe it - experimenting with ways to reword and rephrase and redefine it. Trying to see if it'll fly.

You've gotta know, if he's making these noises, that he's getting inundated with calls and emails and everything else from everywhere (including his own constituency) to END the war and get us the hell OUT. And you've gotta know, too, that he's hearing no end of it from his fellow republi-CONS in the Senate AND in the House about how all of THEM are getting hit from all sides about it, too. They're starting to stagger under the weight of it. They'll be trying to save face for awhile, hoping if they can hold out long enough, the tide will turn and the fairies will all come out and magically turn things around in Iraq and Walmarts will spring up all over there in just a teeny little while, and all will be safe for the next surge - of the oil baron-pirates and their drilling rigs. Well, IT AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN. The American people are NOT going to wake up in a week and a half and suddenly, magically, reverse themselves and this overwhelming trend, and all join hands and dance around and start loving this war. IT AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN. And I think more than a few of these people, deep down, know that's the case and that they're fighting one hellva losing battle.

AND, compounding their growing discomfort, I'll betcha, is that they hate to be wrong. They hate having to admit they were wrong. They hate having to reverse course because they totally fucked this one up. They hate having to admit they hitched their wagons to an anvil (especially after all their swagger and bullying and lying for all these years). NOBODY likes a loser. NOBODY wants to be attached to a loser. NOBODY wants to admit they were fooled by a loser, that they've been had on the end of a fork by a loser. NOBODY wants to admit they've been used, and played for chumps - especially when they went to the mat for bush/cheney. And they're painfully realizing now that THIS IS EXACTLY THEIR FATE. They've built and made this bed and insisted it be moved into the bedroom. Now they realize it's actually nothing more than a steaming dungheap and they don't want to have to lie down on it. And they're gonna have to, ANYWAY.

10. Mitch, let me see if I got this right
We declare war on Iraq, bomb them back into the dark ages, now they have no electricity, refrigeration, we have confiscated any and all monetary resources from the sale of their oil--and they have one last chance to get it right.
You pompous ass

20. One last chance . . . and then what?
No timetable, no Plan B, no nothing. What is the Republican plan? Why aren't they offering any alternatives? The simple truth is they don't have a plan! Wishing and hoping and calling other people names isn't a plan. Sure, it appeals to the lizard brain rock solid segment of their base, but as far as being a plan, it's nothing of the sort.

What is your plan, O Republicans, if the Iraq that you crippled four years ago doesn't stand up and start doing heavy lifting?
