BAGHDAD - A suicide car bomb struck Baghdad's Shiite militia stronghold Saturday, killing at least 18 people as international envoys met in the Iraqi capital to talk about stabilizing the violence-shattered country.

The blast hit an Iraqi patrol in Sadr City at midday, scattering burning debris across a small bridge, witnesses said.

An Associated Press reporter traveling with U.S. troops nearby said the explosion showered shrapnel across a joint U.S.- Iraq security station 300 yards away. The partially shattered windshield of a car landed at the gates of the compound.

Police said at least 18 people were killed and 48 wounded.

Car bomb kills 5, wounds 10 in eastern Baghdad

BAGHDAD, March 10 (Reuters) - A car bomb killed at least five people and wounded 10 others when it exploded near a main road in eastern Baghdad on Saturday, police said.

The remotely-detonated bomb targeted civilians in the Shi'ite district of Sadr City, several miles from the city centre where security was increased as regional and international officials gathered for a conference on Iraq.

Police had no further details on the bombing but said they expected the number of casualties to increase as the wounded are taken to local hospitals.

BAGHDAD (AFP) - A suicide bomber attacked an army checkpoint in Baghdad, killing 26 people while foreign envoys held peace talks just three kilometres (two miles) away, a security official said Saturday.

Six soldiers were among those killed when the attacker rammed a military position guarding the entrance to the east Baghdad Shiite enclave of Sadr City as part of a city-wide operation to quell sectarian violence, he said.

A doctor at the Imam Ali hospital in Sadr City said medics had received 18 bodies and treated 40 wounded, while an official at Ibn Nafees Hospital said it had seen at least four wounded.

The blast erupted in Mudaffer Square on the edge of Sadr City, a short distance from a police checkpoint, an AFP photographer said from the scene.

BAGHDAD - A suicide car bomber killed six Iraqi soldiers and wounded some 20
civilians when his car was stopped by a military checkpoint at an entrance to the
Shi'ite slum of Sadr City, the U.S. military said. Police had reported a car bomb
killed 10 people and wounded 43 others in the same place.

* KIRKUK - A rocket killed three people and wounded 36 when it hit a bus station in
a mostly Kurdish area of the northern city of Kirkuk, a hospital source said.

Iraqi Army stops car bomb from entering Sadr City

BAGHDAD – Iraqi army soldiers successfully aided in stopping a vehicle-borne
explosive device from entering Sadr City at approximately 1:20 p.m., March 10.

A vehicle attempting to maneuver through an Iraqi army checkpoint just south of
the Sadr City security district was halted by soldiers manning a checkpoint from
1st Battalion, 1st Brigade, 9th Iraqi Army Division.

After stopping, the explosives in the vehicle were detonated.

Iraqi army soldiers manning the checkpoint reported the incident and additional
soldiers from the Iraqi army unit quickly set up a cordon, securing the immediate
area from any additional threats.

Initial reports state six Iraqi Army soldiers were killed in the explosion and
approximately 20 Iraqi civilians were injured.

This incident is still currently under investigation.

BAGHDAD – Paratroopers from the 2nd Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment
fired upon a vehicle failing to respond to visual warning signals March 9 in a northern
neighborhood of the Iraqi capital.

The vehicle failed to respond to paratrooper’s warning signals as it approached
their patrol in the Adhamiyah security district. The paratroopers followed established
protocol for escalation of force but the vehicle continued to advance toward them forcing
them to disable it with small arms fire.

Three Iraqis were wounded and three were killed in this incident. The wounded
were provided immediate medical assistance. Iraqi police and national police secured
the area and Iraqi police evacuated the wounded.
The incident is under investigation.

In Diyala, American forces on Friday shot and killed three Iraqi Army soldiers in a military pickup truck after they failed to obey an American order to stop, Iraqi military officials said.

The spokesman for the Defense Ministry, Muhammad al-Askary, said the military was investigating the episode, which took place north of Baquba, though it appeared to be “a mistake.” He said the soldiers were wearing uniforms and were in a vehicle with military markings.

According to Colonel Garver, the American military was also investigating the matter. “We understand there were three Iraqi Army soldiers killed in this engagement, and it is too early to tell the details surrounding the event,” he said.

American and Iraqi forces are fighting a growing Sunni insurgent threat in Diyala, which has become one of the bloodiest sectarian battlegrounds in Iraq. On Friday, the American commander for northern Iraq, Maj. Gen. Benjamin R. Mixon, said he had asked for more troops in the province.
