No deal on UN sanctions for Iran
No deal on UN sanctions for Iran

Iran says it has a right to develop peaceful nuclear technology
Russia and China have said they have reservations about some of the proposed UN Security Council sanctions to punish Iran for continuing to enrich uranium.

The Security Council is seeking to expand sanctions imposed in December over concerns Tehran is secretly trying to develop nuclear weapons.

Iran maintains that its nuclear programme is for purely peaceful energy-generation purposes.

Diplomats from Russia and China have balked at the current UN suggestions.

1. Monday: Key nations split over Iran sanctions
Key nations split over Iran sanctions By EDITH M. LEDERER, Associated Press Writer

UNITED NATIONS - The world's most powerful nations failed to agree on new sanctions against Iran amid reports that President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad wants to put Tehran's case for a nuclear program before the U.N. Security Council.

The surprise announcement about Ahmadinejad's intention to fly to New York came in the throes of intense debate Sunday among the five veto-wielding permanent council members — the U.S., Russia, China, Britain and France — and Germany on additional measures to pressure Iran to suspend uranium enrichment.

South Africa's U.N. Ambassador Dumisani Kumalo, whose country holds the rotating Security Council presidency, said Ahmadinejad had not made a formal request to address the U.N.'s most powerful body, but if he did, "it would be very difficult to deny him that opportunity."

Kumalo said he would "be open to consulting" with the other council members on scheduling Ahmadinejad's appearance. "I would be surprised if they said they don't want to hear him," he told The Associated Press.

2. I am shocked, shocked that there is no deal at the UN on Iran.
The next thing they'll be telling me is that there is no agreement to do something about the genocide in Darfur. Well, maybe if things get really bad there, the world will take notice and do something. :sarcasm:

'Substantial progress' on UN Iran sanctions - British envoy

by Gerard Aziakou

Tue Mar 13, 2:07 AM ET

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - Six major powers moved closer Monday toward a draft
resolution tightening sanctions against Iran over its controversial nuclear program,
Britain's UN ambassador said.

"We've made substantial progress," Emyr Jones Parry told reporters after envoys
of the six nations held two hours of informal talks here.

"Our expectation now is that the fruit of our discussion will be sorted out by our
experts this evening, sent back to our capitals and we will meet again tomorrow
morning to see how we take it forward," he added.

"There are some last-minute details which need to be worked out ... We're quite
close," Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin said late Monday.
