GUATEMALA CITY (AFP) - US President George W. Bush Monday toured Guatemala for talks on immigration and a visit to a sacred Mayan site, after his Venezuelan foe Hugo Chavez took his rival Latin American trip to nearby Nicaragua.
The daylong visit was the fourth stop in Bush's tour aimed at demonstrating US support for Latin America while battling the influence Chavez has gained in the region, where several leftist leaders opposed to US policies have been elected in recent years.
Following violent protests in Brazil, Uruguay and Colombia, Bush was again greeted by demonstrations upon arrival in the impoverished, central American country on Sunday night.
Tight security surrounded Bush's daylong visit to Guatemala, with armed troops patroling the streets and F-16 fighter jets flying overhead.
