House oversight chairman wants Rice to answer Niger uranium questions
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The new chairman of a House investigative committee is demanding answers to questions he put to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice nearly four years ago about President Bush's assertion that Iraq once sought uranium from Africa.

In a letter released Monday, Rep. Henry Waxman said Rice responded to only five of 16 letters about the issue when he was the committee's ranking Democrat -- only those that had been co-signed by congressional Republicans.

"I am now renewing my request as the chairman of the chief oversight committee in the U.S. House of Representatives," he wrote.

The uranium claim, which Bush made in his 2003 State of the Union address, was a key element in the administration's case for the invasion of Iraq. Rice was President Bush's national security adviser at the time.

Dems May Fight White House for Testimony

By: Mike Allen
March 12, 2007 03:07 PM EST

Rep. Henry A. Waxman, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, might ask White House officials to testify about their actions involving the CIA leak case, Democratic sources tell Politico.

President Bush has resisted past calls for appearances by his advisers, so the request could provoke another showdown between the White House and the new Democratic Congress.

Valerie Plame, the former CIA operative at the center of the case that led to last week’s conviction of former White House aide I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, will be the star witness when Waxman holds a hearing Friday into “whether White House officials followed appropriate procedures for safeguarding” her identity.

Congressional sources say Republicans have made a tentative request to call Victoria Toensing, an outspoken lawyer who was instrumental in writing the law protecting the identities of intelligence agents. She contends that no crime was committed in the outing of Plame.

2. Subpoena her ass and put her under oath
She's a good christian conservative. What has she got to hide? The right wing noise machine will obfuscate for her, and the worthless pricks who make up bush's ever shrinking base will lover regardless that her actions have led to the deaths of thousands.

23. Yeah, let's employ all the "legal" means of "intense questioning" in order
to get to the truth. It's not TORTURE, oh no....but if the security of our nation depended on getting the truth out of our unelected officials, wouldn't it be worth it???

5. I'm developing a Waxman crush
I just want to hug him so much. When it was starting to look like the House was going Dem I started saying Chairman names. I think my first declared was Chairman Conyers but Chairman Waxman was right after that.

Waxman has been working non-stop since 2001. He has never waited for the power to make a difference by investigating and writing letters, documenting everything along the way. This is sooooo not new with this sessionin its infancy but a manifestation of all of these years of effort.

I loves me some Henry. He is fearless and brilliant and relentless. Just the kind of patriot this country needs. Love him! Love him! Love him! :loveya:

7. I like Waxman. I'm glad he seems to be undeterred by the GOP machine.
They are crooks. They are liars. They have committed felonies. Investigating them is the very least we can do, and Waxman is just the guy to do it!

I hope the rest of the Dems support Waxman when the shit starts hitting the fan, because the GOP won't go down easily.

Rice will lie, I have no doubt about it. He may have to beat her up a bit to get to the truth.

8. They'll avoid this testimony like the plague.
Rice is the weak link in their armor. I think she'd break if she's under oath and facing perjury charges for lying.

15. I love Waxman, too
He's been waiting YEARS for this - I imagine one of the biggest problems he's having is which investigation to start first.

And they can't do THIS anymore and get away with it, not with subpoena power:

"In a letter released Monday, Rep. Henry Waxman said Rice responded to only five of 16 letters about the issue when he was the committee's ranking Democrat -- only those that had been co-signed by congressional Republicans."

Maybe in the bowels...but no one could have imagined that they'd tell lies for war.

Reminds me of a clip I just saw of Ashcroft under subpoena. He said "I don't know" 85 times.

17. "Who forged them?" "Why did they forge them?" "Why did you refuse to investigate the who & why?"
These are the only 3 or so questions he really needs to ask.

"Who forged them and why?"

"Who would benefit from forging these documents?"

Etc,etc.

19. Eventually the GOP in the senate will get aboard the bandwagon....
The rats always abandon the ship when it starts to sink. Eventually the GOPigs in the the Senate will realize that if they don't turn on the liars, thieves, and cold blooded killers in the Bush Administration, their careers are over.
