EXTRA: Mayas denounce expulsion from sacred site over Bush visit

Guatemala City (dpa) - Guatemala's indigenous Maya leaders were furious Monday after protestors were expelled and arrested at an archeological site being visited by US President George W Bush.

"It is outrageous, an aberration that we are thrown out of the sacred land of our ancestors and that we are not even given the chance to express ourselves," Maya leader Juan Tiney told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

Tiney said two demonstrators were arrested after a group managed to get past the police cordon at the Iximche site.

"We feared for their physical wellbeing, since other expulsions (in the past) have led to the unlawful execution of many of our comrades. But they were released after this man (Bush) left," the Maya leader said.

Anti-Bush March Repressed in Guatemala

Guatemala, Mar 12 (Prensa Latina) Special forces from the Guatemalan Army and police repressed hundreds of demonstrators, who were protesting when local authorities were officially welcoming US President George W. Bush.

The demonstrators, chanting slogans against Bush s visit to Guatemala, succeeded in getting some 330 feet from the government seating, where a triple cordon of special agents from the army and police stopped them.

After more than two hours of protests, during which leaders from different social sectors gave speeches, the security forces began throwing tear gas and beating the demonstrators.

The attack took place despite the peaceful nature of the protest, which was aimed at expressing the people s discomfort at Bush s visit, at a time when the United States is stepping up repatriations of Guatemalans from the US.

7. If your Catholic take some holy water with you.
I don't know what else you could do if you are of another faith.

Maybe the Mayans can purify you after you visit the spot.

The Associated PressPublished: March 12, 2007

GUATEMALA CITY: Two high school students were gunned down in their car in front of President Oscar Berger's alma mater on Monday.

The shooting at the Liceo Javier school in the southern section of the capital of Guatemala City was far from the national palace where U.S. President George W. Bush was to meet with Berger later.

The kindergarten-through-high-school institution run by Jesuit priests is popular among the middle and upper classes of Guatemala, a country in which the richest 20 percent of the population receives two-thirds of all income. Berger is among the school's alumni.

The shooting victims were identified as Victor Batres Castaneda and Edgar Batres, 17-year-old cousins, said Ricardo Lemus, a spokesman for the fire department, which often responds to crime scenes in Guatemala.
