Martin opposes death penalty for Saddam

OTTAWA - Prime Minister Paul Martin doesn't believe Saddam Hussein should face capital punishment and feels the deposed Iraqi dictator's trial should include international "involvement."
Martin was asked in a television interview today whether he agreed with U.S. President George W. Bush, who has argued that Saddam should be tried in Iraq and executed if found guilty of war crimes.

"I personally do not believe in the death penalty," Martin told CHUM television.

Martin was cautious on the thorny issue of where Saddam should be tried, but he did say the international community should be involved somehow.

It's not just Chretien and Martin or Canada....The United States stands alone, I believe, as a democracy that still has the death penalty.....

... declare Canada to be a haven for all Americans of sound mind who wish to escape political persecution. You want the immigrants; we're here and waiting for the word.

Heck, make it a rule that we have to settle away from Toronto and Vancouver (as you're already offering incentives for new immigrants to do, to spread diversity through the country).

It sickens me to no end that I now look to Canada in much the same way that so many Mexicans have had to look to the United States.
