Thousands riot in China, attack cops
BEIJING: Thousands of Chinese farmers and laid-off workers rioted in central China, attacking police and smashing squad cars, a local official said on Monday, the latest in a string of violent protests.

Nine police cars were burnt during the riot on Friday in the central province of Hunan in which 20,000 people clashed with about 1,000 police armed with guns and electric cattle prods, a local official said.

"They did it because they were not satisfied with some government behaviour," the official, surnamed Tan, said over telephone from the district of Lingling, which belongs to the Hunan city of Yongzhou. "They were also unhappy about corruption," Tan said without elaborating....>

3. This is what you get when you leave poor people to be exploited.
Angry people.

The Communist Party in Beijing claims to be on the side of workers, but if that were true, none of this would be happening. I bet dozens of protesters have been gunned down.

11. The Communist Party has been bourgeois since Deng
unabashedly capitalist by any measure. This is no secret, and this happens if the revolution is not properly defended.

5. The simple fact is that China (nor the world) is large enough for 1 Billion middle class lives
China is going to go through TERRIBLE turmoil soon as more feel left out. The China doesn't have enough resources to support China's growth and sustain it, nor offer it to the majority of their 1+ billion residents.

They had no choice but to modernize their economy, but it is gonna get really messy.

16. Comparing the situation in the US vs China is disingenuous at best
Have you ever been to China? Go sometime and then make your comparison.

17. My point is, we don't protest anymore.
Oh sure there are various demonstrations, but like my friends from Europe say to me, "what is wrong with you people, you have so much corruptions, you should be rioting in the streets".

They have a point.

10. The protests need to be non violent
The rioting only give the government the right to "defend" itself. If the protests were non violent, the police wouldn't need to shoot or "prod" them.

12. Don't be silly or naive
they tried that in Tianamen, it didn't work.

Non-violence plays into the hands of the ruling class, it is worthless when the enemy is a system or a class. Non-violent protests just allows the cops to suppress you with ease, which is exactly what happened in Seattle and many other places.

15. Other way around
the protesters in Tianamen tried to be non-violent, but the authorities just crushed them. Therefore, the need for resolute action from the masses is clear.

By the way, the protesters were communists opposing the counterrevolutionaries in the Party. In fact, they sang the Internationale, the international communist anthem, as they were fired upon.

19. All kinds of right-wingers sang the Internationale in 1989.
They all sounded the song of "democratic socialism," and "socialism with a human face." Then, once the communist parties were ideologically disarticulated, the pretense was up and the full program for neo-liberal economics came out in full force. You can see these "communist" student leaders are really right-wingers by their proclamations from exile.

"The Hunan official said the riot had been quelled and that scores of the rioters were arrested. The government was tracking down the organisers."

oh btw, this is how riots always ended in china.
