Thick black smoke rises over central Baghdad

BAGHDAD, March 13 (Reuters) - A large cloud of black smoke was rising over central Baghdad on Tuesday but there was no immediate information on what caused it.

The smoke, which was much thicker than is usually caused by explosions, was hanging thick over the international Green Zone where U.S. and Iraqi government offices are based.

But a U.S. military spokesman said they had been told by police it originated outside the fortified Green Zone. He had no information on the cause or the exact location of the smoke.

(Adds comment on power plant)

BAGHDAD, March 13 (Reuters) - A large cloud of black smoke over central Baghdad raised concerns about a fire on Tuesday but an interior ministry spokesman said it was caused by the start-up of a new unit at a power plant.

Brigadier General Abdul Karim Khalaf said the Doura power plant in the south of Baghdad had started up a third unit, leading to the unusually large amounts of smoke.

5. Wow, the most suprising source for smoke in Baghdad.
If true, then how sad that something that should be somewhat normal and benign comes as a surprise.
