3/13/2007
Some Government Accountability Office employees are seeking representation from the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers.
GAO -- an independent, nonpartisan agency that works for Congress -- has never held a vote to determine union representation. (The Congressional Resource Service, a similar agency, has union representation.) GAO employees and IFPTE began pushing GAO for a union vote in January.
The union push has received initial Congressional support.
“As a strong advocate for our nation’s federal employees, I firmly believe that it is important for Congress to show the workers at GAO that their government is valued. Just as Congressional Resource Service employees have union representation, it is essential that GAO employees have that same opportunity to collectively bargain if they choose,” said Rep. Albert Wynn, D-Md, in a letter to GAO Comptroller David Walker.
