WASHINGTON (AP) - Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson will visit Guatemala and Peru next week as the Bush administration continues efforts to repair ties with Latin America.
The Treasury Department said Wednesday that Paulson would represent the United States at the annual meetings of the Inter-American Development Bank next week in Guatemala City.
The multinational lending bank is voting on a proposal that will provide debt relief to five of the poorest countries in the region - Bolivia, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras and Nicaragua.
While in Guatemala on Monday and Tuesday, Paulson will also meet with business school students for a conversation on economic developments in the region.
He then travels to Lima, Peru, for meetings with top government officials, local business leaders and students to discuss the efforts of Peruvian President Alan Garcia to pursue pro-market policies focused on economic growth and poverty reduction.
