GALLUP: Americans Oppose Libby Pardon, Cheney Approval at New Low

NEW YORK While backing a pardon for convicted former vice presidential aide Lewis "Scooter" Libby has proved popular among pundits, it finds little support in the general population, a new Gallup poll taken in the past week reveals.

Two out of three adults (67%) feel that President Bush should not pardon Libby, who was convicted in federal court of perjury and obstruction of justice. Just 21% feel that he should.

The poll also found that 34% of Americans approve of the job Dick Cheney is doing as vice president. That is down six points from a year ago, and is the lowest approval score Gallup has measured for Cheney.

Many pundits have declared that not many Americans actually care about the Libby case. But Gallup found that 43% say they followed the news about the Libby trial "very" or "somewhat" closely.

No subgroup showed majority support for a pardon. Republicans (34%), though, are more likely than independents (21%) and Democrats (11%) to favor one.

1. Most Americans oppose it, which means most Republicans will be for it, right?

2. 34% approval for the Dick of Death sounds suspiciously high;
The figures I've usually heard hover around 18% (and on a personal level even that seems a little hard to believe...).

5. I was thinking the same thing.
I remember him being in the teens. I don't know anyone that likes him.

6. Sounds about right - about 30 to 35% on either side are hard core
and will stick by the party come hell or high water.

Basically, Cheney has the support of that hard-core 35% and that is it.

11. It's Gallup
Not a credible polling outfit- and known to have an agenda. Their methodologies are sometimes held up in grad school as examples of how not to do research.

14. But it's job approval
Polling about Vice Presidents tends to focus on personal appeal, much like with First Ladies. I know it's hard to remember way back when VPs were mostly ceremonial figureheads. The fact that pollsters are actually asking about Cheney's performance is illustrative of the extent to which everyone realizes that he's our de facto Commander in Chief.

I'm guessing his personal ratings are hovering around the single digits these days.

8. Come on, get real!
The pundit class is no more than 90% right wing. Well, maybe 95%. Ok, ok, probably 97 or 98% tops.

7. I don't understand the pundits
who feel sorry for Libby. He committed a crime and was convicted. If he covered up for others then they should be prosecuted too.

12. It sure took the public long enough to get it
Edited on Fri Mar-16-07 01:04 PM by Snellius
Having spend the last six years in know-nothing idol worship, it's heartening to see that the general public understands -- finally -- what has been going on, better than some of the politicians who seem to falling behind them. The next election could be earth-shaking.

15. Well, NBC's Mrs. Greenspan will transpose this survey into 67%
favor Libby's pardon. She's very insightful!
