Senators pay heed to prisoner abuse case
Two senators who watched Khalid Sheikh Mohammed confess to planning the Sept. 11 attacks and other plots said Friday that his allegations of mistreatment by U.S. captors should be taken seriously and investigated.

"To do otherwise would reflect poorly on our nation," Sens. Carl Levin (news, bio, voting record), D-Mich., and Lindsey Graham (news, bio, voting record), R-S.C., said in a joint statement.

At a closed military hearing last Saturday at the Guantanamo Bay U.S. naval prison in Cuba, Mohammed claimed responsibility for plotting more than 30 attacks and personally beheading American journalist Daniel Pearl.

He also gave military officials a written statement alleging mistreatment before arriving at Guantanamo Bay. He had previously been held by the CIA at secret facilities.

1. If I could pray it would be to pray the truth will come about about Bush's torture of prisoners,
and to live in a world with universal loathing of any thing this filthy.

2. Did he confess in English? Does Levin or Graham speak his
language? If not, the interpreter could be saying anything.

3. Lindsay Graham (R-SC) voted for the Military Commissions Act.
I'm skeptical that he cares about the rights of the accused. This seems like a ruse to make himself seem moderate.

Carl Levin (D-MI) voted against the Military Commissions Act, and so he may be sincere.
