Eleven prisoners have escaped a prison in the Shuaiba military base, west of Basra, the British Army is reporting.
The escape was first noticed Friday but it is unknown how long the prisoners have been gone, or how exactly it was executed. Current information indicates that ten of the prisoners "swapped" places with visitors over the past week, according to the BBC.
British Army spokesman confirmed the escape but gave few details, only saying it was under investigation and there would be a statement forthcoming, according to the AFP news agency.
A "security source" told the AFP that the prisoners had been held for two years without charge.
