Iraq says TNT traces found in Sunni lawmaker's cars

BAGHDAD, March 18 (Reuters) - Iraqi security forces found traces of explosives in vehicles recovered at the Baghdad home of a prominent Sunni Arab legislator and confiscated 65 Kalashnikov rifles, an Iraqi military spokesman said on Sunday.

But Dhafir al-Aani, a lawmaker for the Accordance Front, the largest Sunni bloc in parliament, said Shi'ite death squads that had infiltrated the security forces had fabricated the charges and that six of his guards detained at the raid were tortured.

Brigadier Qassim Moussawi told a news conference the raid on Aani's home in Baghdad's western district of Yarmouk took place on March 9 and that seven people were arrested.

"Four of the cars had traces of TNT, a high explosive. The report of this investigation was not written by Iraqis," Moussawi said, hinting U.S.-led forces were behind the investigation.

Iraq Sunni lawmaker opposes move to lift immunity
08 Mar 2007 16:42:47 GMT
By Waleed Ibrahim

BAGHDAD, March 8 (Reuters) - Iraq's supreme judicial council has asked parliament to lift the immunity of an outspoken Sunni lawmaker on suspicion of links to insurgents, the parliamentarian and his political bloc said on Thursday.

Abid-Naser al-Janabi accused Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki -- with whom he argued earlier this year -- of being behind the move, but Maliki is currently trying to promote dialogue between majority Shi'ites and Sunni Arabs to reduce sectarian violence.

Janabi, a member of the Accordance Front, the main Sunni political bloc in the government, said the prime minister was trying to silence his critics by "inventing these lies and fabricating information to accuse me".

The judicial council's action against Janabi could hamper Maliki's efforts to promote reconciliation and dialogue between his majority Shi'ites and Sunni Arabs, who were dominant under Saddam Hussein but now feel marginalised.

1. I bet if they test the floor of any vehicle in Iraq they'll find traces of TNT.
There have been so many bombs... traces are everywhere you walk.

3. Finding traces of TNT in Iraq?
That's like finding traces of cocaine in dollar bills; it would be surprising if you didn't.
