Hicks 'given sedative' before being told of charges

Penelope Debelle, Adelaide
March 19, 2007
Other related coverage

TERROR suspect David Hicks was left frightened and confused after being forcibly sedated at Guantanamo Bay last month then told of new charges prosecutors wanted to bring against him, his military defence lawyer, Major Michael Mori, says.

The incident, which Major Mori complained about to authorities, happened the day after Hicks' legal team left Guantanamo Bay early last month.

Major Mori said Hicks, 31, had told him he was visited in his cell by a Guantanamo official who gave him liquid medicine ostensibly for a chronic stomach complaint.

"They told him they wanted to try a new medicine for his stomach problems," Major Mori said yesterday after seeing Hicks at Guantanamo Bay last week. "It sedated him. It basically knocked him out for 24 hours — it was a strong sedative — and the next thing he knew he was being dragged into a room and told about the charges."

1. The abuses at Gitmo MUST be stopped. No detainee released to his home legal system has been held
Not ONE.

Even the Saudis let them go.

:wtf:

Our "evidence" of their wrongdoing, which allowed us to throw them into a legal black hole for YEARS must be really damning, eh? Damning against US - not THEM.
:grr:

I want the America that doesn not torture back.
I want the America which operates under the rule of law back - complete with Habeas Corpus.
I want the America which does not operate gulags, use secret rendition, and lie its way into preemptive wars back.

I do not like this new version of America. I do not like GW Bush's vision of America. I am ashamed to be American.

2. And what was our complaint about the Soviet prison system and their use of drugs?
We have become that which we publicly condemned during the Cold War, which was a sham anyway!

4. I'd frankly rather endure periodic attacks than to have this on our conscience
I really would. Plus, it's not like this shit protects us ONE BIT.

This bullshit is such a stain on our nation it is unbelievable.

14. I'm thinking about that and tend to agree with you. As a nurse,
I am ashamed of medical personnel who would so blatantly deceive a patient to drug them into a sleepy stupor when there is no clear reason for it.

22. We don't even know
if, the story being true, it was administered by medical personal.

It's so so old. So worn, so true. The first casualty of war is truth.

5. Lawyer demands reason for Hicks sedation
TERROR suspect David Hicks military lawyer Major Michael Mori, says he can't understand why his client would have been forcibly sedated and has demanded an explanation.

"I don't understand why they would do this to him when they have said David has been compliant for five years," he said on ABC radio today.

"The commander down there has told the embassy, the consul, that David has been compliant all along. This is very strange," said Major Mori who explained that the incident happened last month.

(snip)
The next thing he knew he was being taken out of his cell and somebody was talking to him about charges," he said. "He really couldn't comprehend what was going on. It lasted for almost 24 hours."

10. I must check up on that
Last I heard was that Mori said he may need to step down if his presence as defence lawyer, given the accusations made against him, was going to in any way compromise Hicks' quality of defence. I haven't heard any recent updates on this story.

I'm ashamed of the way Bush** and the neocons and their dimwitted supporters have twisted what America stands for into something very ugly and very un-American.

16. Well, one thing I can say about being an American
is that these people are more like Nazis than Americans -- I certainly feel no kinship with them. And that includes the folks at the top of this government.

I don't blame you for emigrating. My son just started some business dealings with his South American wife's family, which may cause him to spend more time there. And instead of thinking about how much I'd miss him when he did, my mind immediately -- and I mean immediately -- went to "Hmmm, that could be a GOOD thing. For all of us....damn, does that mean I'd have to learn a new language at my age? Shit."

That this line of thinking came to me at all, let alone IMMEDIATELY is just ghastly to me. I've never been anything but an American, through and through.

17. This isn't an American movement
It's a global Anglo aristocratic one. It exists in Australia, too. They targeted the US for destruction
first, but they're coming after all of us with any form of democratic system. You can't escape from these
people by going anywhere. They're all over Europe also ... they're merely waiting.

Have you read anything about the Bush cabal, the NeoCons and their links to the Henry Jackson society? I recommend
your doing so before pinning it all (or even mostly) on the US. These monsters are globalists. Oh, and John Howard
is one of them.

21. Agree. We are on the same side
In light of yr last post, my re-reading makes your other post unambigous. Don't blame the person, but the medium that demands rapid respnse accompanied by no observation of body language.

Howard's a fucking snake. As recently as yesterday, and I guess he had a heads-up about the Hague story, he was declaring that, 'We are in for the duration'. What I read into this was that I cannot believe the man is unaware of the strife Bush is facing. Yet he announces 'our' support of this war. My crystal ball tells me that this is Howard's feeble effort to distance himself from Bush, yet reinforce his own 'strong' leadership, specifically that Australia would have chosen the course, even if the USA did not.

This offends me on a number of levels, the main one being like USA, we have no distinct, parliamentary force demanding withdrawal. Even the left of politics kowtows to the fearfuls and the aspirationals. It's all very well to talk about globalists, but to the grass roots voter the only pollie of interest is the one who drops the interest rates and funnels payoffs to the 'family'.

There has been an injection of fear rhetoric into political discourse in the last few years, thankfully most aussies are far too pragmatic to buy into it. Unfortunately, empty cans rattle the loudest and the odd religious lobby has found a voice. They don't seem to last long though.

Now melody. You had some recommended reading for me?

Not when the globalist becomes a noxious influence like Bush. Trust me, Americans are being given a very painful crash course in global-being-local.

As for recommended reading, I'd only offer it regarding the Neocon/Jackson movement and its only partially American roots. I wouldn't think of telling an Aussie about his country.
