BISHKEK, March 19 (Reuters) - Kyrgyzstan demanded on Monday the
United States hand over for trial a U.S. serviceman who shot dead
a Kyrgyz truck driver in December at a U.S. military airbase in
the Central Asian state.
Kyrgyzstan has threatened to review its agreement with the United
States on the use of the Manas airbase, set up in 2001 to support
operations in nearby Afghanistan, over the killing.
"The General Prosecutor's Office has sent the U.S. authorities a
demand to hand over (the airman) to Kyrgyz justice officials to
start criminal proceedings," the office said in a statement.
Troops at the Manas airbase in Kyrgyzstan enjoy similar status
to diplomats and cannot be prosecuted by Kyrgyz courts under an
agreement between the two countries.
