At the request of peace activists, the Seattle City Council passed a resolution Monday afternoon calling for a US withdrawal from Iraq.
Despite being a nonbinding political statement from a liberal city on the so-called "Left Coast," Council President Nick Licata, who sponsored the resolution, said the gesture will resonate in the other Washington:
"This resolution by itself certainly is but a small voice in the greater voices that are going to be heard today across the country. It's time to start focusing the huge amount of resources this nation has back on this country and on our people. ...
Even though it will not likely sway the Bush Administration, the resolution is meaningful to peace activists like Alice Woldt, she said in testimony to the council Tuesday. "This administration is going to go ahead with what they're going to do anyway," Woldt said. But the resolution "gives us hope that other elected officials are listening."
