W.Va. taxpayers covered Lynch homecoming celebrations

State records show taxpayer money paid for golf umbrellas, balloons and makeup for July's Jessica Lynch homecoming celebration in Wirt County.

A Freedom of Information Act request from WSAZ Charleston revealed the total cost of the event and other assorted security details in the following weeks came to $48,073.50.

Jessica Lynch came home to Wirt County on July 22 after rehabilitation at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington D.C. The state rolled out the red carpet. At the time, state leaders said private donations paid for much of the event.
