Knoxville pet owner sues cat food maker over recall

KNOXVILLE — A Knoxville woman whose cat suffered kidney damage after eating some of the pet food involved in a national recall has sued the manufacturer for $25 million.

Barbara Light has filed a federal lawsuit against Canada-based Menu Foods Inc., and her attorneys hope others will join the lawsuit.

Light's cat, Trudy, got sick after eating Special Kitty, one of the 95 cat and dog food brands recalled by Menu Foods last week. The cat did not die but needed treatment, said Light's attorney Dan Stanley.

Other owners whose pets died after eating the food have contacted the attorney.

"We expect them to join the lawsuit," he said. "It would be absolutely impossible, impractical and inconceivable to bring all these lawsuits in all these courts."
