WASHINGTON - Democrat John Edwards is suspending his campaign for the presidency, and may drop out completely, because his wife has suffered a recurrence of the cancer that sickened her in 2004, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, sources said Thursday.

A prominent Iowa Democrat told Norah O’Donnell of NBC News that Edwards’ campaign has begun calling supporters in Iowa and telling them that he will suspend his presidential bid and started canceling upcoming events in Iowa.

Meantime, a friend of Edwards told The Politico website: "At a minimum he's going to suspend."

The friend, who was identified, added, "Nobody knows precisely how serious her recurrence is. It'll be another couple of days before there's complete clarity."

"For him right now he has one priority which is her health and the security of the two young children," the friend said.

2. How awful for Elizabeth, John and their family. I hope she will be OK.
 She is a such a wonderful and intelligent woman. John is a very lucky man. He will have time to run for office in the future. For now, he's doing the right thing and choosing to support his wife.

6. If it is a recurrence, and that's a big if...
she will have good days and bad days. No one who suffers a recurrence of breast cancer goes on to "recover".

Having said that, I know many ladies who are surviving, and have been for years after being diagnosed with a recurrence. Much will depend on whether the cancer has spread to distant organs.

If it is a new breast cancer, that's a different story. I am holding onto good thoughts for Elizabeth. I wouldn't wish the disease on anyone.

How sad for Elizabeth and John Edwards. I don't blame him one bit if he decides to drop out. I think Elizabeth is far more important to him at the moment.

16. I'm really sorry to see this.
Breast cancer can be so horribly devastating. It's such a roller coaster ride of uncertainty. I've not been a fan of Edwards because of his vote on IWR, but I greatly respect him for this. The man knows what is important.

29. It is different with breast cancer.
I know many woman who are surviving with bone mets, several years after it being diagnosed.

One night, feeling sorry for myself as I was being treated for breast cancer, I snuggled up in a blanket and watched a movie. It was The Shawshank Redemption. There was a line in that movie that hit me upside the head, and it has been an inspiration to me ever since.

"Get busy living, or get busy dying." Elizabeth is going to be very busy...living.

Um, not the correct story.

But you got a scoop! Yay, journalism! Unnamed sources speaking off the record -- no need to check 'em, just get it out there! :eyes:
