SIOUX CITY, Iowa (Associated Press) -- A blip in most of the early polling, GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee said Saturday he believes his conservative views will prevail.

"Sometimes when people say, 'When you get traction, I'm going to be with you,' my answer is, 'You are my traction,' " the former Arkansas governor told The Associated Press.

"If people of genuine conservative convictions don't support a conservative with convictions, then quite frankly I'm not sure what the point would be to be in politics," he said in an interview.

Huckabee was on a one-day visit to heavily Republican western Iowa, his second trip to the state since forming an exploratory committee. But in a state whose precinct caucuses will launch the presidential nominating season, Huckabee has spent less time than better known rivals and trails in most early polling.

Democrats were facing a similar situation in 2004. People said that Dean wasn't electable even though he held more traditional Democratic values that some of the other candidates. By the time McCain, Romney, and Rudy are through the primary they will be seen by the nation as pandering to the fringe right and as a flip flopper, not as someone who stands up for their beliefs.

12. I have only seen Huckabee on Real Time. I don't agree with him but he seemed

like a nice guy for a conservative.I wouldn't ever vote for hime but he appears to be a nicer and more reasonable person that any of the other GOP candidates.I don't know anything about him other than he is a bit too fundie and has lost lots of weight and is a typical "conservative. 16. An article I read recently portrayed Huckabee as more of a *true* Christian.

Unlike the god-fearing neo-cons who use God as a tool to get people to blindly follow them down a path of war and hate, Huckabee was portrayed as the kind of Christian who believes the focus should be on heaven instead of hell and Christians should help the poor, etc.

The article made it sound like Huckabee might have a problem in the election because the conservative "base" would think someone like Huckabee is too liberal because he doesn't subscribe to the neo-con church of 'God-hates-everyone-but-us-hateful-fundy-jesus-freaks.'

Anyway, if the article was accurate about Huckabee I thought this guy might be a good influence on his party. At least a step in the right direction if nothing else.

You'll find why he is not getting any support from the Repugs. He ticked off the Club For Growth group. The same idiots that tried to defeat Chafee in the RI primary and helped us out. While Huckabee has excellent Religious Right Repug creds (he's a Baptist minister), he did a "read-my-lips" moment on taxes while governor of Arkansas. This resulted in a running battle with the tax-the-poor crowd at CATO and Club for Growth. He'll never get the nomination because of it.

along with Huckabee..Jim Gilmore and Ron Paul are two more southern Republicans already running. But that doesn't include Fred Thompson who might run or Newt Gingrich..who has already raised $2 million for his PAC.

IMO Mike Huckabee is nothing but a third tier candidate struggling just to join the second tier. If he does join the ticket, it will only be as a running mate for McCain or Giuliani.
