Hillary Clinton's $2.6 Million Hollywood Hit
Source: Fox News

Sen. Hillary Clinton hit Hollywood last night at the estate of grocery store mogul Ron Burkle and took home $2.6 million for her presidential campaign.

It was twice as much as Sen. Barack Obama raised last month at a similar fundraiser thrown by Dreamworks SKG's David Geffen — a point that was made privately during the Clinton event by many of the fundraisers.

And while the Burkle event didn't have the quantity of star power that the Geffen event had, it sure had the quality. Clinton was seated at the head table with Barbra Streisand and her husband, actor James Brolin; Yahoo chief executive Terry Semel, who once was the co-head of Warner Bros. with Robert Daly; Daly, with wife, songwriter Carole Bayer Sager.

Hollywood was also represented by current Warner's chief Alan Horn, as well as actors and longtime Clinton friends Mary Steenburgen and Ted Danson; "Entourage" star Jeremy Piven; "American Idol" judge Paula Abdul; record exec Jeff Ayeroff; HBO chief Chris Albrecht; esteemed producer Norman Lear; and Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr. Close Clinton friend Quincy Jones was absent, but sources said there was an unavoidable conflict.

Remember people were buzzing when Barack Obama raised 1.3 million (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/6381375.stm) from his hollywood fundraiser? I wonder why HRC isn't getting the same buzz when she raised twice as much as Obama.

1. So, Hillary's friends can round up twice as much as Obama's on a given night.
That does it for me; she must be the the best person to be our next president! But wait - what if some Republican raises more money? Does that mean I should vote for him instead? What to do, decide based on candidates' statements and proposals or just count the money?

BTW - Hillary raising money is an old story. Obama raising a huge amount from people who were Hillary supporters; that's man bites dog.

3. wow, I guess these wonderful people all love her position on Iraq
besides being wrong from the start, and all over the board on what we should do, she now says she can see leaving some Americans there for some time

I don't care what Hollywood, fox, the DLC, or anyone else says, I don't trust her.

Other's may feel differently, but I am entitled to my views as they are to theirs

10. The difference is the assumption that Hillary has already rounded up ALL
the money and that therefore the primaries are moot. The fact that any other candidate can come up with a respectable sum is news.

Another reason is that Hilary's ability to raise funds is presented as a reason to support her. (Hillary can raise tons of money, money is needed to win, therefore Hillary is a winner) In light of that, fund raising becomes a measure of a candidate's viability and worthiness.

Clinton nabs K St. backers her rivals shun

<...“Hillary Clinton has tremendous strength in part because of the remarkable national network that been able to create over the years,” said Daschle in an interview. “That list is as extensive as any candidate for president has had in modern times. Barack doesn’t have that. No question she’s in a much stronger position than he is at this point network-wise.”

But Daschle, a consultant at Alston & Bird, suggested that Obama may use this to his advantage by portraying Clinton as a compromised Washington insider and himself as an outsider with new ideas, not beholden to D.C.’s political and business establishment.

“The longer you’re in Washington, the less capable you are of presenting yourself to the country that articulates the need for a change in direction,” he said. “You become part of the Washington establishment. … I found that to a certain extent I had to fight that perception in my more senior years in the Senate.”>

9. How nice to see the wealthy rally around Hillary, and her type of values
Hillary said that the people of Venezuela did not share our values (Take that, Venezuela!). She is right insofar that she is referring to the values she shares with the American and Venezuelan elites.

Let's hear it for those of us that share the values of the working class, the peasants, and the indigenous peoples of the world. We are not Hillary people, that's for sure!

13. It is really troubling to me to see Democratic candidates "out-Republicanizing" each other.
Edited on Sun Mar-25-07 08:41 PM by shance
I just received a call from a friend who wanted me to attend a Pelosi event. The 'entry' fee is $2500, or if I would like to get a picture with Nancy, like I can with President Bush, I can pay $5,000.

I have been in fundraising for quite some time. I have spoken with numerous candidates and Democratic 'operatives' who all seem to have no interest in doing what Democrats should do - if our party was interested in being a true Democratic party, it wouldn't be reserved for the richest 1%.

If we were interested in being a true Democratic party, we would have smaller more intimate fundraisers that didn't cost has much, we would have larger fundraisers that didn't cost as much, we would value people more, because we would be smart enough as Democrats to know that our numbers are one of our greatest strengths not the amount of our millionaires/billionaires. We would be more inclusive and invite more people to PARTICIPATE and not CONTRIBUTE FINANCIALLY. We would see the value in peoplse voluntary skills and less in their monetary worth. We would invite more people to become involved in the political process instead of again, harping on them for more money and not giving a damn who they are or what they can contribute in other ways than money. We would actually be an inclusive party.

We are now almost as bad, if not as bad and as elitist as the Republican party. Perhaps we are worse because those in positions of power (other than Governor Dean) have yanked the power from the states and the locals and tried to take it all to Washington. What kind of Democratic party is that?

I come from a family of Republicans and I am seeing how much Democrats are trying to emulate the Republican money grab, when that is not remotely the point of who we are supposed to be. That is NOT why I joined this party almost twenty years ago.

Whether they have a D or an R in front of their name doesn't matter.

15. Are we supposed to be impressed?
So, money raised equals primary power?

I think Hil's not gonna like the reception she gets from the grassroots. They tend to support ISSUES, not buying power.

I think we're all getting wise to what money does to a candidate.

That's not democracy.

On edit: And of course, that's not an HC issue but a systemic problem.
