Gonzales backers defend his ethics, urge him to stay
Source: Associated Press posted by Ft Wayne Journal Gazette

The White House and a key Republican senator reaffirmed support Saturday for Attorney General Alberto Gonzales even as Democrats questioned his credibility in the firing of eight federal prosecutors.

Critics said the latest document disclosure – more than 280 pages of e-mails, calendar notations and other documents sent to Congress late Friday – bolstered their case for Gonzales’ ouster.

“He has always been straightforward and honest with me,” Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said Saturday. “So, unless there is clear evidence that the attorney general deliberately lied or misled Congress, I see no reason to call for his resignation.”

Gonzales has said he participated in no discussions and saw no memos about plans to carry out the firings Dec. 7 that Democrats contend were politically motivated.

1. I love what Conyers had to say...
“How much scrutiny do we have to put behind everything the attorney general says?” the House Judiciary Committee chairman, Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich. “I know he’s busy, and he could have done things that he didn’t remember, but we’re going to give him as much rope as he needs.”

7. Did the God of Bipartisanship die over the weekend?
Gee, up until now, we've been told by the Republicans and their media echo chamber that as long as one Democrat could be found to sign onto their hare-brained schemes, it meant that it had bipartisan support, and everybody then had to go along. Democrats in great numbers and several Republicans have all called for Gonzales' ouster, but suddenly "bipartisan consensus" gives way to the thundering hypocrisy and self-serving pronouncements of the White House and a sycophantic Senator who can no longer distinguish between someone telling the truth and someone telling a lie.

They really need to post these rule changes in advance; some people are beginning to wonder if the game isn't just a weensy bit fixed.
