Two car bombs target Iraqi tribal leader

BAGHDAD, March 27 (Reuters) - Two suicide car bombs exploded near the home of a tribal leader in the Abu Ghraib district west of Baghdad on Tuesday, killing the man's son and several other people, a provincial official said.

Sheikh Thahir al-Dari, whose home was targeted, is the head of the al-Zobaie tribe, which is the same as that of Deputy Prime Minister Salam al-Zobaie. The deputy prime minister was the target of an assassination bid last week.

Ahmed al-Dulaimi, head of the provincial council media office in Anbar, said the sheikh's son was killed in Tuesday's double car bombing and there were several more casualties.

Dari is a member of a group of tribes who have formed an alliance against al Qaeda in the western province of Anbar.

BAGHDAD (AFP) - US forces in Iraq said on Tuesday they had arrested two
leaders of a network suspected of killing about 900 civilians and wounding
nearly 2,000 others in a series of high-profile car bomb attacks.

Haytham Kazim Abdallah al-Shimari and Haydar Rashid Nasir al-Shammari
al-Jafar were arrested separately on March 21 in Baghdad's Sunni district
of Adhamiyah, the US military said.

"It is estimated that since November, the car bombs from this cell have
killed approximately 900 innocent Iraqi civilians and another 1,950 have
been wounded," the military said.

Shimari, the alleged leader of the network, was arrested after he and his
driver engaged in a shootout with US troops trying to flag his vehicle
down.

BAGHDAD - Mortar rounds slammed into a Shiite area in Baghdad on Tuesday,
killing at least four people and wounding 14, police said, while sectarian
clashes erupted for a fourth consecutive day south of the capital.

The mortar attack occurred about 9:45 a.m. in Abu Dasheer, a Shiite enclave
in the Sunni-dominated Dora neighborhood in southern Baghdad. Police said
those killed included two children, a woman and a man. It was the second
mortar attack on the enclave in three days — three people were killed on
Saturday.

In Iskandariyah, 30 miles south of Baghdad, suspected Shiite militants broke
into a Sunni mosque about 4 a.m. and planted explosives that damaged the
gate and a fence, police said.

Clashes broke out about an hour later, leaving four Sunni militants dead and
one Shiite militant wounded, police said. Authorities had imposed a vehicle
ban on Monday after similar attacks.

BAGHDAD, March 27 (Reuters) - Insurgents killed 14 people in two
attacks in western Iraq on Tuesday targeting Sunni Arab tribes that
have joined an alliance against al Qaeda, officials said.

A suicide bomber exploded his car outside a restaurant on a main road
north of Ramadi, killing at least 10 people and wounding 25, a security
source and police said.

The blast targeted an area where local tribes have joined the tribal
alliance against al Qaeda militants.

Earlier four people were killed in two blasts in Abu Ghraib, west of
Baghdad. One of the dead was the son of tribal leader Sheikh Thahir
al-Dari, said Ahmed al-Dulaimi, head of the provincial council media

Jubouri said the bomb targeted civilians on a central street in Tal Afar, which is near the Syrian border.

wounded 103 in the northwestern Iraqi town of Tal Afar on Tuesday,

One of the blasts was detonated by a suicide bomber who lured victims
to his truck to buy wheat that was loaded on the back, Jubouri said.
A second truck bomb exploded in a car park.

DUBAI, March 14 (Reuters) - An Iraqi militant group said on Tuesday
it had killed an abducted Iraqi brigadier general for taking part in
alleged attacks on Sunni Muslims.

"After interrogating Jamal Rasheed Mohammad Ali ... it was established
that he was a pillar of the Shi'ite government of (Prime Minister Nuri)
al-Maliki," Ansar al-Sunna said in a statement posted on the Internet.

On March 14, the group said it had captured Ali in an ambush in western
Baghdad and posted copies of Iraqi and Multi-National Forces credentials
that identified him as a deputy director in the Ministry of Defence, but did
not describe him as an officer.

"He had taken part in a number of schemes against the Sunnis in various
parts of Baghdad ... (therefore) with God's help, God's ruling was
implemented by shooting to set an example to others," it said.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A military leader of one of Iraq's biggest Sunni Arab
insurgent groups, the 1920 Revolution Brigades, was killed on Tuesday in a
bomb attack west of Baghdad, the group said in an Internet statement.

The group identified the leader as Harith al-Dari, who is also the son of
an anti-al Qaeda tribal leader. The Brigades is believed to have given tacit
backing to a group of Sunni Arab tribes who have formed an alliance against
al Qaeda in volatile western Anbar province.

Dari's relatives blamed the attack on the hardline Sunni Islamist group,
which has come into conflict with some tribes because of its adherence
to a radical form of Sunni Islam and indiscriminate killings.

The 1920 Brigades said in an Internet statement monitored in Dubai that
Dari "who used to shoulder the honor of fighting the enemy in the Abu
Ghraib sector" was killed in an ambush in Abu Ghraib. The Brigades is made
up of mostly former military officers and is believed to mainly target U.S.
soldiers.
