Gonzales visits Chicago (and runs for the exits...)
Source: Chicago Sun-Times

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales dashed out of a Chicago news conference this afternoon in just two and a half minutes, ducking questions about how his office gave U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald a subpar rating.

Gonzales, who increasingly faces calls for his resignation, was here to promote a new ad campaign and had planned a 15-minute press availability. He left after taking just three questions over a firing scandal consuming his administration.

Before leaving, Gonzales said he wanted to "reassure the American people that nothing improper happened here."

Gonzales has been besieged with criticism over the firing of eight U.S. attorneys as Democrats claim the decision was politically motivated. Gonzales previously said he wasn't directly involved in the decision. But documents released Friday indicate Gonzales attended a Nov. 27 meeting and approved of the dismissals.

8. This has everything. This whole mal-administration in one set piece.
The top law enforcement officer lying to everyone to their faces.
A high ranking cabinet official "asking" inspectors to - not find the truth- but say that nothing wrong happened.
An embattled WH official on a cynical P.R. tour about children safety.
The AG of the United States of America running from the room to avoid questions.
An inept administration planning department who can't avoid having the embattled official sit right next to one of the people at the heart of the problem.

This is worse than just a train wreck. It's a train wreck that is burning and spewing toxic gasses into the atmosphere.

13. On behalf of the American people, Mr. Gone-zales
We'd be a lot more reassured if you'd be a stand-up guy and answer a few questions. Your constant dashing for the exit whenever the subject comes up looks more than a little like you have something to hide. And I believe it was your own boss, Mr. Bush, who said that people with something to hide have usually done something wrong. Now, what conclusion are we supposed to draw, despite your empty reassurance? In the past, your word has been a pretty fungible commodity, easily exchanged for its exact opposite the very next day.

15. ah. now he cares about rights?
"Gonzales' visit came a day after senior aide and White House liaison Monica Goodling refused to testify before a committee exploring the firing scandal; instead, she took the Fifth Amendment.

Gonzales refused to comment on that topic, saying it was her choice to exercise her constitutional right."

Too bad us terrorists don't have any constitutional rights left to exercise-

18. "...here to promote a new ad campaign...". What's with that?
How Republicans are protecting kids from child molesters? Featuring Congressional pages?

Or the one about how Republicans are stopping the cocaine traffic from Colombia? (Billions of our taxpayer dollars to the Colombian military, for the US "war on drugs"; head of the Colombian military just arrested for rightwing paramilitary drug trafficking, mass murder of leftists and peasants, and a plot to assassinate President Chavez in Venezuela; former chief of intelligence implicated; Bush's pal President Uribe in deep doodoo over this huge, breaking scandal.)

I can think of a lot of "ad campaigns" that might emerge from Alberto ("torture memo") Gonzales' DoJ, but these two stand out.

Are you kidding me? An ad campaign for child safety?

Tha picture in my head of Gone zales sitting next to Fitz, one of the guys Almost Gone downrated in performance, talking about child safety?

Wish I could draw, it would make a great cartoon.

20. You know, I really don't see how the AG can do his job
if he can't handle even basic questions about his job performance from the press. It's truly an absurd spectacle--I can't think of another moment in recent history quite like it, and I'm old enough to remember Watergate.

30. it is just one coward after another
in this administration. NOT one - not one of them w/ any morals, principles or character. Of course if they did possess any morals, priniples or character they wouldn't have been hired in the first place.

Requirements if you are seeking in the * administration:

1. have no qualifications for the position you seek;

2. please provide 3 instances where you displayed cowardly behavior and/or 2(a). completely sold out to a higher authority who was in a position to promote your sorry ass.

32. Merry Fitz-mas, GONE-zalez!
Before the press availability, Gonzales hosted a roundtable discussion about safety for children on the Internet. He sat next to Fitzgerald, whom his office had rated as undistinguished, according to a Washington Post report. Fitzgerald earned the feeble rating while he headed an inquiry into the leaking of CIA operative Valerie Plame's identity. Fitzgerald recently won a conviction against Vice President Dick Cheney's top aide, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby."

He not only thought could he waltz into the hometown of the man who engineered Libby's last stand, but SIX NEXT TO HIM??? And Bush couldn't find anyone else to promote the campaign, like uh uh uh--
