Argentina scraps cooperation deal with Britain over Malvinas Islands
Argentina has scrapped an agreement with Britain to explore oil and gas around the Malvinas Islands, known as the Falkland Islands by Britons, on the eve of the 25th anniversary of the war over the South Atlantic archipelago, local press said on Wednesday.
Argentine Foreign Minister Jorge Taiana said Tuesday that Argentina took the step to protest London's decision to offer oil exploration licenses in the area without consulting Argentina.
After the cancellation of the agreement, Britain now has no right to grant such exploration licenses, he said.
The disputed islands, located in the southern Atlantic region near the Argentine coast, were occupied by British forces in 1833.
