Video of US-Mexico border shooting appears to back immigrants' story
The Associated Press
Published: March 28, 2007

TUCSON, Arizona: A grainy surveillance video taken as a Border Patrol agent fatally shot an illegal immigrant from Mexico appears to lend credence to the surviving immigrants' accounts of what happened.

The Cochise County attorney released the video clips and documents this week after public records requests by The Associated Press and two newspapers. The shooting has drawn condemnation from the Mexican government and spurred an FBI civil rights investigation.

Border Patrol agent Nicholas Corbett encountered a group of four immigrants among a larger group of border crossers whom he and other agents were rounding up on Jan. 12 near Naco. The group included three brothers and one man's wife.

Corbett has declined to be interviewed by investigators but told other agents that he came around the front of his SUV, saw a man with a rock in his hand close to the rear of the vehicle and fired when the man moved to throw it.

The witnesses said the agent came from behind the victim, and the video appears to support that version.

1. The Mexican Government is outraged!
Outraged, I tell ya!!!!!!!

Of course they aren't outraged enough to fix their fucking country so people won't have to leave just to survive.

4. But on the other hand...
But on the other hand, the Mexican government didn't appear to pull the trigger on this one... seems like it was one of our guys.

6. So I take it you think they are the only party responsible for the migration?

3. The agent should be prosecuted.
Immigration is a sore point, I understand, but we can't have our lawmen behaving lawlessly.

5. That's what we have our Minutemen for
I'm sorry, but IMHO much of what goes on regarding the Mexican border smacks of racism, keeping the "brown people" out. Does anyone think that a Border Patrol agent would shoot someone crossing illegally from Canada?

7. Not all Mexicans are brown. Mexico is multicultural. Border enforcement is not inherently racist
Dems should be serious about real border enforcement if we want to really protect union jobs and wages.

11. Border security is not racist - but the way we go about it sometimes is
Like I said, I doubt that Border Patrol agents would be firing on anyone entering illegally from Canada, or fleeing into Canada. You don't hear anyone clamoring for a fence along the entire Canadian border.

All you have to do is look around this country and see all the complaints about the "Hispanic-ization" of society, the demands for "English only", and this "send them all back" attitude to see what I'm getting at here.

10. Shooting is unreasonable force in response to rock throwing
I wonder if this rock shows up in the video either.

12. Minor point...
...but it depends on the rock and the range. A fist-sized rock swung in the hand is obviously a deadly weapon. A small stone hurled from 30 feet isn't.
