Suicide bombers kill more than 100 in Iraq

By Ahmed Rasheed

BAGHDAD, Iraq, March 29 (Reuters) - Suicide bombers killed more than 100 people in a Shi'ite neighbourhood of Baghdad and in a mainly Shi'ite town north of the Iraqi capital in a wave of sectarian violence on Thursday, police said.

A suicide bomber killed around 60 people in a market in the Shaab district of northern Baghdad, police sources said, in what appeared to be the latest in a string of attacks on Shi'ite districts and towns.

At about the same time, three suicide car bombs exploded within minutes of each other in Khalis, 80 km (60 miles) north of Baghdad, killing about 50 people and wounding scores, police and hospital officials said.

The blasts follow a sharp upsurge in sectarian bloodshed, particularly outside the Iraqi capital, that has killed scores. Iraq has been swept by violence between majority Shi'ites and minority Sunnis that has killed tens of thousands.

6. Those brave insurgents strike again at those pesky civilians who
must be illegally occupying the markets and commercial areas in Baghdad and other Iraqi cities. To be honest they did explode bombs at a couple of checkpoints as well, so they probably missed some of those sneaky shoppers. (The French resistance is rolling over in their graves wishing they had thought of the strategy of indiscriminant killing of French civilians as a strategy to get the Germans to withdraw.)

7. It is a complicated and horrible situation.
There is a civil war between competing ethnic groups and an insurgency against our occupation forces. The French Resistance did in fact go after supporters of the Vichy government as well as the German occupation forces. Our presence prevents any resolution of the conflict.

11. I agree that the French resistance did target suspected
collaborators and the German occupation forces. I think where they missed out was in was the PR value of large scale indiscriminate slaughter of civilians in markets, schools, religious processions and the like.

Look I admit it is a great strategy in the modern age, so I have some "respect" for the perpetrators. I only hope that now that we have provided the proving ground for this strategy, it is not used in the resolution which, as you say (and I agree), will occur after we leave.

9. But Rush just said they were having carnivals in Baghdad!
Swear to God, last night I tuned into Rush Limpballs just to torment myself, and he said the surge has been great, that people are moving back to Baghdad and having home-coming carnivals and celebrations!

Maybe we can dress that fat bastard up as a clown and air-drop him into the center of Baghdad to provide "entertainment"

Multiple suicide bombings of Shiite areas kill at least 104

By Sinan Salaheddin
ASSOCIATED PRESS

10:44 a.m. March 29, 2007

BAGHDAD – Multiple suicide bombers struck in predominantly Shiite markets in Baghdad and in a town north of the capital, killing at least 104 people and wounding scores on Thursday – the day that new U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker took office.
Two of the suicide bombers struck a market in the Shaab neighborhood of northeastern Baghdad at 6 p.m., killing at least 61 people and wounding 40, police and security officials said.

About the same time, three suicide car bombers attacked a market in the town of Khalis north of Baghdad, killing at least 43 people and wounding 86, according to police and officials in the predominantly Shiite town.
The first attacker in Khalis drove his explosives-laden car into the crowded area, followed in five-minute intervals by the other two bombers, who apparently were aiming at rescue crews and onlookers gathering in the aftermath, police said.

16. i guess the age of flowers and candy are not coming back...
i'd like to see a parody of ol' rumsfeld where he's giving a 'feel good' speech (about flowers and candy no less) and buckets of blood and gore are routinely splashed upon him. it would be a cathartic image at the very least.

17. Nearly 400 killed in Iraq bloodletting in past 3 days
Nearly 400 killed in Iraq bloodletting

Jay Deshmukh | Baghdad, Iraq

30 March 2007 11:07

Nearly 400 people have been killed over the past three days in Iraq as insurgents and sectarian militias ripped through a massive United States security crackdown concentrated around Baghdad.

A series of coordinated bombings of Shi'ite marketplaces in and north of the capital defied a latest plea from embattled Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki for a joint effort to curb the bloodshed threatening to tear his country apart.

"The country is facing many challenges that need a consolidated front in which all Iraqis must participate," Maliki said just hours before 125 people were killed in marketplace bombings in Baghdad and the Shi'ite town of Khalis.

Two suicide bombers tore through the market in the capital on Thursday, killing 82 men, women and children as they shopped before the evening curfew and in preparation for Friday, the Muslim day of rest.
