NEW YORK -- Top New Jersey Democrats are choosing sides in the race for president.

NewsChannel 4 has learned that Hillary Rodham Clinton will appear in the Garden State next Monday at an endorsement press conference with New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine.

New Jersey State Senate President Richard Codey has already thrown his support behind John Edwards. These early endorsements have become more important with the Garden State's early primary date, set for Feb. 5.

News of Corzine's support comes after Clinton picked up the endorsement of the National Organization of Women, a group of half a million members who support feminist candidates for elective office.

Widening his lead in the 2008 presidential race in New Jersey, former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani tops New York Sen. Hillary Clinton 50 - 41 percent, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Arizona Sen. John McCain ties Sen. Clinton 45 - 45 percent.

Hillary, despite all her money and name recognition, continues to underperform.

She ought to be able to carry a progressive-leaning state right next door to her "home" state.

If she get's the nomination, she's going to blow through all the corporate money she raises just trying to keep the states that Sen. Kerry and Vice President Gore won.

2. Reminds me of the 'election' of Howard Dean

Dean was practically anointed as the candidate long before a vote was cast. A funny thing happened when people started voting. I only hope that primary season isn't going to be so compressed that all chance of a process is gone.

In the beginning, Kerry was the annointed leader, until Dean stormed into the political scene and suck all the air from every other campaign.

7. Kerry was not the annoited leader

In 2002, the CW was that if Gore wanted it he should run. This was no great sacrifice to the DLC because Bush was at about 70% approval. When he said he would not run, Leiberman was the favorite. At that point, Kerry did poll well. In 2003, Kerry had cancer surgery and missed the Dem speech event in Feb/march, where Dean gave a great speech against the war. (This was not the first anti-war speech by Dean and Kerry had also spoken against invading in January )

Dean was the leader from late August through December 2003. In December 2003, he was challanged by Clark more than anyone else. In Dec 2003, Kerry was so not the favorite, he took a loan against his house.

that he was the "annointed one". He was listed with Leiberman and Gephardt as a favorite early on - though he was never pushed by the media or the party.

it was the Dean supporters that "practically anointed" him.
The one's who are going nuts about Hillary being "anointed" are
the anti-Hillary contingent. I don't know any pro-Clinton people
who buy her being "anointed."

5. As a New Jersey resident, Lautenberg, Cody, or Menedez

may carry more weight now. Corzine is dealing with the Katz issue again - and at least in my area the press has not been kind about it.
